YouTube TV subscribers are in for a shock today as the price of a subscription jumped massively overnight. Last month, a subscription cost $49.99 per month, but as of today it's $64.99. That's for new subscribers, but existing subscribers aren't off the hook. Their subscription will increase to $64.99 after July 30.
"We don’t take these decisions lightly, and realize how hard this is for our members. That said, this new price reflects the rising cost of content and we also believe it reflects the complete value of YouTube TV, from our breadth of content to the features that are changing how we watch live TV," Christian Oestlien, VP of Product Management for YouTube TV wrote in a blog post. "YouTube TV is the only streaming service that includes a DVR with unlimited storage space, plus 6 accounts per household each with its own unique recommendations, and 3 concurrent streams. It's all included in the base cost of YouTube TV, with no contract and no hidden fees."
YouTube knows this is a huge price hike, and Oestlien goes on to say, "While we would love every member to continue to stay with our service, we understand that some of you may choose to pause or cancel your membership. We want to make YouTube TV flexible for you, so members can pause or cancel anytime here."
Existing subscribers and anyone considering signing up to the service will understandably today be asking, "is it worth it at that price?" As The Verge points out, YouTube TV's pricing was only $35 per month when it launched in 2017. By 2018 it was $40, then in 2019 it jumped again to $50, and now it's just shy of $65.
The increase in price does come alongside more content being added to the service. Eight channels from ViacomCBS are now available, including BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land, and VH1. YouTube is also promising to add BET Her, MTV2, MTV Classic, Nick Jr., NickToons, and TeenNick "at a later date." In total, that's over 85 channels.
Finally, there are some new features being added, including a dark theme for desktop and mobile devices, a new look for the Live Guide, the ability to mark a show as watched, and the addition of pause, rewind, and fast forward functionality for recorded content. YouTube is also testing a new "jump to" feature, which allows you to jump to specific news clips within a recording. It's already available to desktop users and will launch for mobile "in the coming weeks."
