CLEVELAND, Ohio -- YouTube TV has raised the price of its live TV service to $64.99, a 30 percent increase over its previous rate.
The new price is now in effect for new sign-ups. Current subscribers will see the change reflected in their statements beginning July 30.
“We don’t take these decisions lightly, and realize how hard this is for our members,” YouTube TV Vice President of Product Management Christian Oestlien said in a blog post. “That said, this new price reflects the rising cost of content and we also believe it reflects the complete value of YouTube TV, from our breadth of content to the features that are changing how we watch live TV.”
YouTube TV, now the most expensive cable replacement, has over two million subscribers. Hulu + Live TV, at $54.99 a month, is the industry leader with 3.3 million subscribers.
But YouTube TV hopes to close that gap by plugging a glaring hole in its channel offerings. The price increase comes with the addition of several Viacom networks to the lineup: BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1. The service now offers more than 85 channels with more, including BET Her, MTV2, MTV Classic, Nick Jr., NickToons, and TeenNick, on the way.
YouTube TV also features best-in-class DVR and interface, and is generous with its six accounts per household. Still, the service lacks the original content and vast library of programming that Hulu offers. In addition, when combined with an internet plan, YouTube TV’s price is comparable to cable.
