BOSTON -- Baseball season has arrived. The Red Sox will open their 2020 campaign at Fenway Park on Friday afternoon against the Orioles, beginning a 60-game sprint toward the postseason. Here’s a series preview:
Baltimore Orioles (0-0) vs. Boston Red Sox (0-0)
SERIES SCHEDULE (and TV information):
Fri. July 24, 7:30 p.m. ET: NESN, ESPN+
Sat. July 25, 1:35 p.m. ET: NESN
Sun. July 26, 1:35 p.m. ET: NESN
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT:
Though virtually everything has changed in 2020, the Orioles’ outlook has largely stayed the same. A year after finishing 54-108, Baltimore is once again expected to be among baseball’s worst teams.
The O’s have the lowest projected win total in baseball -- at 20.5 -- per DraftKings Sportsbook. It will be a major surprise if they don’t finish last in the American League East.
Baltimore had a pretty quiet winter, bringing in former Red Sox shortstop Jose Iglesias and two lefty starters (Tommy Milone and Wade LeBlanc) as their most notable winter additions. The club traded veterans Dylan Bundy (Angels) and Jonathan Villar (Marlins) and added two former Red Sox pitchers in Hector Velazquez and Travis Lakins.
In Brandon Hyde’s second year as Baltimore’s manager, the Orioles are expected to be anchored by starter John Means (who will not pitch this weekend due to injury). The club will be without its best offensive player, Trey Mancini, who underwent surgery to treat colon cancer during spring training.
PITCHING PROBABLES:
Friday, 7:30 p.m. - LHP Tommy Milone (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP Nathan Eovaldi (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Saturday, 1:35 p.m. - RHP Alex Cobb (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. LHP Martin Perez (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Sunday, 1:35 p.m. - LHP Wade LeBlanc (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP Ryan Weber (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
THREE SOX TO WATCH:
Nathan Eovaldi
Eovaldi was never effective in 2019, posting a 5.99 ERA in 67 ⅔ innings and missing three months with due to a loose body in his pitching elbow. In the second year of his four-year, $68 million contract, he’s hoping to rebound and will get an early chance to do so with his first career Opening Day start.
Alex Verdugo
Verdugo, the Red Sox’ most notable offseason addition, will make his team debut over the weekend. While he won’t serve as Mookie Betts’ direct replacement, the 24-year-old former Dodger has a bright future and will likely get ample opportunity this season. With two lefties starting for Baltimore, Verdugo isn’t expected to start all three games but he’ll likely be in the lineup for one or two of them.
Martin Perez
Perez will make his Red Sox debut Saturday afternoon, slotting in as the No. 2 starter in the rotation. Perez is hoping to start 2020 the same way he started 2019, when went 7-1 with a 2.95 ERA in his first 11 starts.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Red Sox will face the Orioles for 10 games in 2020, with six being played at Fenway Park and four at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Baltimore’s other trip to Boston is Sept. 22-24 and the series in Baltimore will be held from Aug. 20-23.
