THE WEIGHT OF GOLD (2020) 9 p.m. on HBO. “I thought of myself as just a swimmer, and not a human being,” Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, says in the trailer for “The Weight of Gold.” Phelps shares his struggles with mental health in this documentary, for which he is also an executive producer. He is joined by several well-known Olympians including Shaun White, Apolo Ohno, Lolo Jones, Sasha Cohen and Bode Miller, who discuss the mental health challenges they have faced after the Olympic Games. The documentary is airing during what was supposed to be the 2020 Tokyo Games, before the event was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

THE HATER (2020) Stream on Netflix. “Suicide Room,” a 2012 film from the Polish director Jan Komasa, serves as the prequel to “The Hater,” which won Best International Narrative Feature at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival. Though both movies center on the themes of cyberbullying and harassment, they differ in their approach: “Suicide Room” represents the victim, and “The Hater” is the perpetrator. But at face value, “The Hater” is about a sociopath named Tomasz (Maciej Musialowski), who, in an effort to impress his childhood crush, inserts himself into a shady world of internet villainy. The public relations agency that Tomasz joins prides itself on aggressive tactics to defame others on social media, and in order to prove himself, Tomasz infiltrates the campaign of a liberal politician. He uses fake accounts and false information to create an atmosphere of animosity, and the manipulation does not bode well for Tomasz in the long run.

THE COLOR PURPLE (1985) Stream on Hulu. This onscreen adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel of the same title was nominated for numerous Academy and Golden Globe awards in 1986, the year after it was released. And Whoopi Goldberg received a Golden Globe for her role as Celie, a young Black woman in early 1900s Georgia who suffered decades of abuse — first from her father and then from her husband, Albert. Oprah Winfrey plays Sofia, the wife of Albert’s son, Harpo, in this harrowing story about overcoming adversity.

MY 20TH CENTURY (1990) Stream on Criterion. In his review for The New York Times in 1990, Vincent Canby called “My 20th Century” “a number of wondrous things,” adding that it was awarded the Caméra D’Or at the 1989 Cannes Festival “for very good reason.” The film is about twin sisters, Dóra and Lili (both played by Dorota Segda), who were separated in 1880s Bucharest after being kidnapped by two different duplicitous men. The next time their paths cross is in 1899 on the Orient Express, which they are both aboard for different immoral reasons. The film, written and directed by Ildiko Enyedi, was revived at the Museum of the Moving Image last fall.
