What’s Streaming
OUT 1: NOLI ME TANGERE (2015) Stream on Mubi. Jacques Rivette’s film from the early 1970s is difficult to summarize, in part because it revolves around the question of whether or not plots actually exist. The main story threads — two separate theater troupes rehearsing different plays by the Greek tragedian Aeschylus: one about a young man hunting for a secret society called the Thirteen; the other about a canny hustler who stumbles across the shadowy cabal — are woven together only to be unraveled. The conspiracy that Colin (Jean-Pierre Léaud) is seeking to uncover, which Frédérique (Juliet Berto) discovers by accident, is similarly ambiguous. It appears to exist — Frédérique seems to find correspondence between its members, and several avowed participants appear in the film — but its power and status are unclear. This tension is never resolved, but over the course of the film’s more than 12 hours, it deepens and becomes more complex.
DARK SKIES (2013) Stream on Netflix. Rent on Amazon, iTunes, and Vudu. Sometimes the dark side of suburban life in America is so well hidden and mysterious that it can only be represented in fantastical forms. The paranormal and the mundane mingle in this sci-fi horror film by Scott Stewart. The Barrett family, led by Lacy (Keri Russell) and her husband Daniel (Josh Hamilton), seem happy but are struggling financially. He’s lost his job, and she doesn’t make enough as a real estate agent in the years after the 2008 financial crash to keep them afloat. Their troubles are compounded when they begin to experience, individually and as a group, inexplicable phenomena that may originate from extraterrestrial forces.
COAST & COUNTRY: RAILWAY WALKS Stream on Acorn TV. In this six-episode documentary series, Julia Bradbury guides viewers across England, Scotland and Wales via the disused railways lines that crisscross Britain. These tracks tell the story of the country’s industrialization and its effects on landscapes and lifestyles in the region. Their current state also speaks to the changes that Britain has undergone in its more recent history. Traveling on foot past crumbling engine houses and through ancient viaducts, Bradbury finds details that would be missed by even the most intrepid car-bound explorers.
