BET Awards, 8-11 p.m., CBS and BET. As the networks take a fresh interest in black lives, here’s a first: CBS simulcasts this show with its sister channel, BET. Comedian Amanda Seales hosts a virtual ceremony; it has awards for best actor, actress and movie, but the emphasis is on music. Performers include Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, Chloe X Halle, Kane Brown, Wayne Brady, DaBaby, D Smoke, Jonathan McReynolds and Megan Thee Stallion.
“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” finale, 9 p.m., Showtime. This began as a good series that depended way too much on the supernatural. Now the other-worldly bits have stepped aside; we still briefly see the deity of Mexican folklore, but the action is propelled by human emotions. The early minutes seem to reflect current events … even though this is set in 1938 Los Angeles; the final 20 minutes are remarkable in both the beauty of the craftsmanship and the depth of thea gony.
“Grantchester” and “Beecham House,” 8 and 9 p.m., PBS. The first hour invokes the sweet spirits of a 1957 movie theater; it also has a perplexing romance for Will and a grim jolt for his housekeeper. The second has palace intrigue (literally), plus a murder and someone betraying John. Both shows, under the “Masterpiece” banner, have richly crafted visuals. And both have a common flaw: They’re great at setting up problems, but then solve it at astonishing speed.
“What Made America Great,” 10 p.m., Fox News Channel. The White House staff gives Brian Kilmeade a tour, including the East Room, the State Dining Room and (usually closed to visitors) the Map Room. Kilmeade talks about the rooms’ past and artifacts — and goes to the Oval Office, where President Trump discusses the White House history.
ALSO: This is a key night for the premium networks: Last week, HBO debuted “Perry Mason” and Showtime had the season-opener of “The Chi.” They continue at 9 p.m. today, with others alongside. At 10 p.m., HBO debuts “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” a six-week true-crime documentary. At 8 p.m. (rerunning at 8:30), Showtime brings back “Black Monday,” which was temporarily stopped by the COVID shutdown, after six half-hour episodes aired. They rerun today, starting at 5 p.m.
