Martin Truex, Jr. starts from the pole position Monday, June 22, a day after rain postponed NASCAR’s GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
Truex, Jr. will start from the pole position and will be flanked by Denny Hamlin. Starting third will be Kyle Busch, followed by Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick. Chase Elliott, defending champion of the GEICO 500, starts 11th while the track’s latest winner, Ryan Blaney, who won last October, will be alongside Elliott and roll of 12th
The GEICO 500 starts at 2 p.m. (3 p.m. ET) and will be televised by FOX, which is also available to stream on fuboTV (7-day free trial) and Sling(free trial).
Racing is just one of the issues NASCAR is dealing with Monday.
A noose was found in the garage stall of driver Bubba Wallace at the NASCAR race in Alabama on Sunday, less than two weeks after he successfully pushed the stock car racing series to ban the Confederate flag at its tracks and facilities.
In addition, a small plane protesting NASCAR’s decision to ban the Confederate flag flew above the Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday before the GEICO 500.
The plane pulled a large Confederate flag, and behind the flag an additional banner read “DEFUND NASCAR.”
The Geico 500
When: Monday, June 22
Time: 2 p.m. (3 p.m. ET)
Where: Talladega Superspeedway
TV: FOX
Stream: fuboTV (7-day free trial) and Sling(free trial).
The race, which was pushed back to 2 p.m. CDT on Monday, is the first amid the coronavirus pandemic in which NASCAR opened the gates for up to 5,000 fans. Those in the grandstands were urged to seek shelter roughly 30 minutes before the scheduled start, leading to a two-plus hour wait.
NASCAR allowed 1,000 military members to attend last weekend's rain-disrupted race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The event was stopped several times for more than three hours of total delays.
Denny Hamlin and Joe Gibbs Racing were set to run with an all-black paint scheme honoring the National Civil Rights Museum, with the museum's logo on the hood. Sponsor FedEx won't be displayed on the car.
The flag ban is another statement for NASCAR.
Fan David Radvansky, who started coming to Talladega in the 1990s when his father parked cars at races, was among fans applauding NASCAR’s decision to ban the Confederate flags.
“I don’t think there’s a place for it in NASCAR, to be honest with you,” the 32-year-old said. “That doesn’t sit well with all the good ole boys but it is what it is.”
