HOME GAME Stream on Netflix. See athletes risk their lives on several continents — and at sea — in this documentary series, which looks at traditional sports around the globe. These include calcio storico, a centuries-old competition in Florence, Italy, that at once resembles football, rugby and street fighting; kok-boru, a game played in Kyrgyzstan that involves competitors on horseback throwing a goat carcass into a goal; and free diving — in which divers plunge into the ocean without oxygen tanks — in the Philippines. The series’s eight episodes each explore a different sport. They double as character studies of the athletes, including a free-diver who offers a tidy explanation of his passion: “I am happy when I am in the deep.”
ONCE WERE BROTHERS: ROBBIE ROBERTSON AND THE BAND (2020) Stream on Hulu; rent on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu and YouTube. How did the Band learn to waltz? Find out in this documentary from Daniel Roher, which offers a history of that folk-rock group — including their rise to fame and their 1976 farewell concert, captured in Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Waltz.” The movie revolves around the songwriter and guitarist Robbie Robertson, who recounts the group’s history alongside musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton. (Robertson is one of the Band’s two surviving original members; the other, Garth Hudson, appears in archival footage.) “You can’t beat the access or the clips, although the absence of Hudson (whom Roher apparently filmed) from the present-day interviews is peculiar,” Ben Kenigsberg wrote in his review for The New York Times.
IRRESISTIBLE (2020) Rent on Amazon, Google Play, Vudu and YouTube. Five years after leaving “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart makes a return to political satire with this comedy, which he wrote and directed. “Irresistible” stars Stewart’s old “Daily Show” pal Steve Carell as Gary Zimmer, a decorated Democratic strategist who helicopters into a Wisconsin town to help a retired Marine colonel (Chris Cooper) win a mayoral race, which Gary believes carries deep symbolic value. (The helicoptering is metaphorical; Gary travels by fancy jet and a Ford S.U.V. selected to telegraph American authenticity.) A Republican strategist (Rose Byrne) shows up to counter Gary. The movie is making its debut in virtual cinemas because of the pandemic. In a recent interview with The Times, Stewart spoke of releasing a movie at this moment. “There’s tragedy everywhere,” he said, “and you’re like, ‘Uh, does anybody want chocolate?’ It feels ridiculous. But what doesn’t feel ridiculous is to continue to fight for nuance and precision and solutions.”
What’s on TV
47TH ANNUAL DAYTIME EMMY AWARDS 8 p.m. on CBS. The Daytime Emmy Awards have been around since 1974, but the ceremony is going virtual this year. Hosts of “The Talk,” including Sharon Osbourne and Marie Osmond, will run the show, with remote appearances from Gayle King, Kelsey Grammer and many others.
