10 Reality Bites (1994)
Ethan Hawke as Troy Dyer
The romantic comedy Reality Bites is an enjoyable insight into 1990s slacker culture starring Ethan Hawke, Winona Ryder, and Ben Stiller. The story of a videographer making a documentary about her friends, Hawke plays Troy Dryer, the total encapsulation of a Gen-X cool-guy guitarist who can’t hold down a proper job. Today, Reality Bites feels dated in all the right ways due to the character's style, the music, and the apathetic outlook of the cast. However, Reality Bites' eternal message about young adults' journey to discover their identities is still as relevant as ever, and Hawke shines as the sensitive slacker who has trouble admitting to his romantic feelings.
9 Predestination (2014)
Ethan Hawke as Agent Doe/”The Barkeep”
The science fiction thriller Predestination is a wild ride from start to finish with plenty of twists and turns that will keep audiences scratching their heads to the very end. Ethan Hawke delivered a committed performance as Agent Doe in this time-travel thriller that takes place across multiple timelines. Predestination was a time travel box office flop that should've been a hit. Sarah Snook, who later found success as Successions' Shiv Roy, also shines as co-star Jane, in this mind-bending exploration of identity based on a 1959 short story called “All You Zombies” by Robert A. Heinlein.
8 Training Day (2001)
Ethan Hawke as Officer Jake Hoyt
Training Day
-
- Release Date
- October 5, 2001
- Director
- Antoine Fuqua
- Runtime
- 122 minutes
Ethan Hawke was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as ambitious LAPD Officer Jake Hoyt on his first day as a detective in Training Day. Along the way, Detective Alonzo Harris, played by Denzel Washington, takes him into the heart of corruption and criminality in the gritty world of narcotics cops. Washington’s over-the-top brutality is calmed by Hawke’s subtle performance, and he grounds the film with the ethical struggles and slow realization that this first day on the job is going to be anything but calm.
7 Gattaca (1997)
Ethan Hawke as Vincent Freeman
An intelligent and thoughtful sci-fi exploration of eugenics and genetics, Gattaca stars Ethan Hawke as Vincent Freeman, a man conceived naturally in a society where most people are genetically engineered to have their parent’s best traits. Gattaca deals with genetic discrimination as Freeman struggles to realize his dream of going to space. As a film strongly rooted in its futuristic dystopian concept, Hawke still manages to portray a believable and compelling character pushing back against a world that invalidates his existence.
6 Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)
Ethan Hawke as Hank Hanson
Ethan Hawke stars alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman in Sidney Lumet’s crime thriller Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. Hawke plays Hank Hanson in this complex non-linear story that is told from several different perspectives. Focusing on two brothers planning a robbery of their parent’s jewelry store, Hawke expertly portrays the younger brother led astray by his more cunning older sibling. Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead works well due to the strong chemistry between its two lead stars and the fantastic direction of Lumet in his final feature.
5 Before Midnight (2013)
Ethan Hawke as Jesse
The third in a trilogy of films dealing with the love story of Jesse, played by Ethan Hawke, and Céline, played by Julie Delpy, Before Midnight is a special film that, after the whirlwind romance the characters had already gone through, gives time to show what they are like as a real couple and family. Hawke brings a powerful performance to this film that has a lot to say about the nature of love, marriage, struggle, and long-term commitment. While it is not quite able to top the beauty of the first movie in the series, Before Sunrise, it highlights the more subtle and vulnerable side of Hawke’s strength as an actor.
4 Boyhood (2014)
Ethan Hawke as Mason Evans Sr.
Boyhood
-
- Release Date
- July 11, 2014
- Cast
- Ethan Hawke , Patricia Arquette , Ellar Coltrane , Lorelei Linklater
- Runtime
- 163minutes
Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age drama Boyhood is impressive for its production details alone and the fact that it’s also an incredible film is just the cherry on top. Filmed over 12 years, Boyhood is the story of young Mason Evans Jr’s journey growing up. Ethan Hawke plays the father Mason Sr, who in the beginning appears to be on course to becoming a deadbeat dad and, in the end, turns out to be an insightful and caring father. Boyhood features a strong performance from Hawke who not only commits totally to the role but set aside a few weeks every year for more than a decade to take part in one of the highest grossing movies in Hawke's career.
3 Dead Poet’s Society (1989)
Ethan Hawke as Todd Anderson
The coming-of-age drama Dead Poet’s Society is primarily known for Robin William’s passionate performance as the inspiring English teacher John Keating. However, just as important to the film’s success is Ethan Hawkes’ fantastic performance as the anxious and creative schoolboy Todd Anderson. As one of Hawke’s earliest roles, Dead Poet’s Society showcases Hawke’s skill for nuanced and self-reflective characters, and he brings something powerful to his portrayal of a young boy who just needs some people in his life who believe in him and encourage his potential.
2 First Reformed (2017)
Ethan Hawke as Pastor Ernst Toller
Ethan Hawke plays Pastor Ernst Toller, a small-town church leader going through an intense personal crisis, in Paul Schrader’s excellent late-career triumph First Reformed. Hawke’s performance is one of the very best in his entire career as the film deals with sensitive topics maturely and powerfully. With a script that is reminiscent of Schrader’s best writing, such as Taxi Driver, First Reformed deals with faith, identity, and religion in a standout film dealing with tragedy, a dark tormented past, and the burdensome nature of modern ecological and sociological concerns.
1 Before Sunrise (1995)
Ethan Hawke as Jesse
The top movie in Ethan Hawke’s wide and varied filmography has to be the romantic drama Before Sunset. This Richard Linklater film follows Jesse, played by Ethan Hawke, and Céline, played by Julie Delpy, as two people who meet on a train and spend a romantic evening in Vienna. Together they explore topics of time, death, and self-discovery in film that beautifully captures what it is like to become excited by another person and feel those first hints towards true love. The start of an exceptional trilogy of movies, released at nine-year intervals, Before Sunrise stands as one of the greatest romances in all of cinema.
