The American Film Institute is out with its annual list of Top 10 outstanding TV programs, and this year’s model has only three titles that were lauded in 2022.
ABC’s Abbott Elementary, FX/Hulu’s The Bear and FX’s Reservation Dogs are making return engagements. They are joined by two four freshman series — Netflix’s Beef, Freevee’s Jury Duty, HBO’s The Last of Us and Peacock’s Poker Face — along with Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and HBO’s Succession.
Four of the AFI winners are third-year shows: Abbott Elementary, The Morning Show, Only Murders in the Building and the now-ended Reservation Dogs. The Bear recently was renewed for Season 3, and Succession ended its Emmy-laden four-season run in May. The latter drama and Reservation Dogs are the only series on this year’s list that also made AFI’s 2021 Top 10.
AFI also released its Top 10 films of 2023 today.
AFI says its TV honorees are culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image. The hardware will be handed out January 12 during the private AFI Awards luncheon at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills.
“As our nation and our world continue to navigate difficult times, AFI is honored to shine a proper light upon these works of art that lift us up and, ultimately, lead us to empathy,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. “That we do so without competition is AFI’s hallmark, and we are proud to gather this community of artists together – as one – to celebrate their extraordinary contributions to our time.”
