Summary

  • Crafting the perfect plot twist is an art that can increase a show's popularity and refresh its tone.
  • Balancing the element of surprise with groundwork is crucial to a satisfying plot twist.
  • Plot twists keep audiences engaged and subvert their expectations, but too few twists can lead to boredom.

Crafting the perfect plot twist is a delicate art, but some TV shows have mastered the craft and implemented twists no one saw coming, leaving viewers scrambling for answers for years to come. Many great series have made their name with a stunning plot twist that no one saw coming, increasing their popularity and viewership because of the publicity. These twists have also served to change the tone and narrative of the show when it needs a refresh. As well as providing vital insight into the feelings and motivations of characters.

The balance between not making an upcoming twist too obvious, but still laying the groundwork for it to make sense is vital to a successful plot twist. If the reveal comes out of nowhere, it won't be satisfying to the audience, just confusing. Once an audience is invested in a series, plot twists are a great way to subvert their expectations and keep them engaged in the story. Additionally, if there aren't enough twists in the story, it's easy for the viewer to get bored and move on.

12 Dan Is Gossip Girl - Gossip Girl (2007 - 2012)

He would do anything to be an insider

The biggest question throughout Gossip Girl's run was the identity of the mystery blogger who kept disrupting the lives of the Upper East Siders. Dan (Penn Badgley) was indeed an outsider when it came to the core group, and that was something he resented. However, it didn't occur to anyone that he would go so far as to insinuate himself into the lives of his friends by using their secrets against him.

When it was revealed that he has been Gossip Girl the whole time, there were ways in which Dan being Gossip Girl made no sense and some ways in which it completed his character arc. It took some time for his friends to forgive him and understand why he went to such lengths to be accepted. Regardless, it was the biggest shock of the series and changed everyone's opinion of him forever.

When the audience is introduced to the titular liars in Pretty Little Liars, it's in the wake of their friend Alison (Sasha Pieterse) officially being declared dead after being missing for a year. For the first few seasons, she's only shown in flashbacks as the girls try to piece together who killed her and who's blackmailing them. However, in season 4 they find out that she has been alive all this time and on the run from A, the blackmailer. This is devastating and shocking to the girls, and although they're happy to get Alison back, it only adds a whole new host of problems to their lives.

Throughout season 1, the premise of The Good Place is predicated on the fact that the four main characters have died and gone to a heaven-like place in the wake of their deaths. However, their afterlife is rife with challenges, and far from blissful. It's then that Eleanor (Kristen Bell) realizes that they're actually in hell, aka The Bad Place. This realization completely changes the tone and plot of the story, as well as the relationships between characters. It was a smart twist, as it set the story on a new path for the remaining seasons, opening the show up to bigger and better opportunities.

The identity of The Mother is teased over every season in How I Met Your Mother, with each of Ted's (Josh Radnor) love interests presenting themselves as a possibility. In season 9, the threads begin to weave together as Tracy (Cristin Milioti) is shown to be The Mother and her path starts to intersect with Ted's. Everything is on track for happily ever after until Tracy dies in the series finale.

Flashing forward, it's shown that she gets sick and dies later on in their lives and that the future Ted telling the story is single. This leaves him available to end up with Robin (Cobie Smulders), his unrequited love of the series. It was a controversial choice that brought up questions of why they introduced The Mother in the first place if Ted was always meant to be with Robin. However, love it or hate it, no one would've guessed that Ted's long journey would end up where it did.

Due to its long run, Grey's Anatomy has utilized many twists, turns, deaths, departures, and every known plot device to bring characters in and out of the show. One of the most devastating and unexpected deaths came in the form of beloved doctor George O'Malley (T.R. Knight) getting hit by a bus and passing away in season 6. Part of the reason that this was so sudden was that the accident left him unrecognizable, so it took a long time for the other doctors to figure out his identity. Once they do, it seems as though he might be saved, but he ends up passing away despite their efforts.

Bernard (Jeffery Wright) is in charge of maintaining and engineering the hosts in season 1 of Westworld, but it never occurs to him that he might be one of them. Looking back, subtle hints are dropped throughout the first season that something is going on with Bernard behind the scenes, something to do with the hosts, but it's still earth-shattering for both Bernard and the audience when he comes to terms with his reality. The new complexity of Bernard's situation and the powerlessness he feels is devastating, and the line between host and human becomes even more blurry.

When And Just Like That... the Sex and the City reboot premiered, it was an answer to both the love and the criticisms that the original show faced. Before the premiere, there were questions as to what would be in store for Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) in the new show, since she got her happy ending with Big (Chris Noth). However, the series took care of this in episode 1, by killing him off.

Although this left viewers astounded, not to mention sad, at this loss, it was ultimately necessary for Carrie to get back to her single life and carry on the show. Once she overcame her grief and was ready to reenter the world, it was an opportunity to focus on the dating scene of a woman later in life. Since then, the series has recovered, but the boldness of the choice to begin a series with the death of such an important character is not soon forgotten.

Walter White (Bryan Cranston) was always a morally dubious figure in Breaking Bad, and he had fewer and fewer scruples about doing terrible things as the series went on. However, no one expected him to stoop to the level of killing an innocent child. Brock (Ian Posada) was the son of Jesse's (Aaron Paul) girlfriend, and in order to get Jesse on board with his plan, Walt framed an enemy for Brock's murder. There's no question that his actions were unforgivable and that the audience could never look at Walt the same way again once he crossed this line.

Though he fights valiantly, his body is taken over by Bob (Frank Silva), who uses him to escape the Red Room and walk free in reality. Seeing Bob in the reflection when Cooper looks in the mirror is like a punch in the gut, and a horrifying cliffhanger to leave the audience on until the revival many years later.

Flashing between the past and present, the series deals with multiple timelines, leaving the audience wondering how the past will come to manifest in the future. Though Nell dies in the first episode, flashbacks show her being haunted by a mysterious ghost all her life, and it's finally revealed that that ghost is her, and she has been following herself. There are plenty of twists, Nell's fate is one of the strongest since it reveals how much power the house has.

1 Dawn Appears - Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997 - 2003)

It's like she's always been there

Season 5 saw a significant tonal shift for Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was older and dealing with life changes, including the sudden appearance of a brand-new sister. Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) was dropped in at the end of the first episode of the season, and the show proceeded as if she'd always been there. More than jarring, it was borderline infuriating to wait and wonder who she was and what she was doing there. Fortunately, she remained on the show long enough for the audience to come to love her just as much as Buffy did and be pleased with her surprise introduction.
