After losing for the first time this season, No. 13 Oklahoma has to adjust and focus on jumping back into the College Football Playoff picture, and that journey begins in a road tilt against Iowa State on Saturday in Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooners are coming off a 27-14 loss to No. 11 Baylor, one of the worst performances since Lincoln Riley joined the program in 2015. Quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Spencer Rattler combined for 178 yards and 2 interceptions on 13-of-24 passing.
Iowa State lost 41-38 against Texas Tech after Red Raiders kicker Jonathan Garibay hit an insane 62-yard field goal as time expired, the longest kick in Texas Tech history. Cyclones quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 356 yards and 3 touchdowns in the loss, but added a pair of interceptions.
This game brings together the two teams picked No. 1 and No. 2 in the preseason Big 12 poll, along with the two teams that faced off in the 2020 Big 12 Championship Game. However, both teams are at risk of falling out of the Big 12 title picture altogether with a loss. For the Cyclones, it might already be too late.
Oklahoma vs. Iowa State: Need to know
Offensive woes: Oklahoma started 9-0 for the first time since 2004 -- when the Sooners played for a national championship. Unfortunately, the streak came to an end thanks to a troubling loss to Baylor. The Bears held OU to 260 yards, the least of the Lincoln Riley era, and became the third team in 2021 to hold the Sooners to the lowest point total of Riley's tenure. Switching quarterbacks to Williams helped bring some momentary relief, but in hindsight, the gains appear solely built around playing four consecutive bad defenses.
Disappointing sequel: Iowa State ranked No. 4 in returning production, including a top-five ranking on the offensive side of the ball. Unfortunately, the Cyclones only rank middle of the pack among Big 12 teams in offensive metrics, which is a huge reason why they've dropped three Big 12 games after an 8-1 conference campaign a year ago. Purdy has been especially disappointing in losses, throwing 5 touchdowns to 6 interceptions vs. 10 touchdowns with 0 interceptions in all other games.
Rising rivalry: Iowa State announced its entrance to the national scene by beating Oklahoma in Norman in 2017, a 38-31 victory over perhaps the best Sooners team of the 2010s. The win, Iowa State's first over Oklahoma since 1990, propelled coach Matt Campbell to stardom. Then last season in Ames, the Cyclones did it again, beating Oklahoma 37-30 behind 139 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns from running back Breece Hall. Oklahoma got the Cyclones back in the Big 12 title game, but it was a six-point game. Iowa State has played Oklahoma as well as any team in the country over the past five years.

Oklahoma vs. Iowa State prediction, picks
Oklahoma's poor performance against Baylor corresponded with its first matchup against a halfway decent defense. The bad news? The Cyclones might be even better on that side of the ball and boasts a running back that will keep the chains moving. Oklahoma might find a way to pull away in a home game, but ISU can easily keep the game close once again. Prediction: Iowa State (+4)
