A longtime Maine TV journalist who anchors news broadcasts throughout the state, Cindy Williams, said Wednesday she plans to retire next month.

Williams, 57, began working as a reporter for WCSH-TV 6 in 1989 and has been with the Portland station and Bangor affiliate WLBZ-TV 2 — together known as News Center Maine — ever since.

She currently co-anchors three newscasts daily, but said she wants to spend more time with her family and to pursue other interests. They include real estate sales; Williams has been a licensed agent for five years and works with Portland-based Abode Real Estate Group.

“I’m a little bit of a real estate fanatic, and have been for decades,” she said on air Wednesday afternoon. “I have a great time helping people buy and sell homes.”

Williams graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1985 with a degree in radio, television and film. Before moving to Maine with her husband, she reported for TV stations in Mississippi and New Hampshire. In Maine, she won awards from the Associated Press and the Maine Association of Broadcasters for her coverage.

Her husband, former News Center Maine anchor Lee Nelson, retired last year.

Williams surprised many fans with her announcement Wednesday during a News Center Maine afternoon broadcast.

“I am calling it a career, folks,” she said. “It has been phenomenal ... the greatest fun of my life.

“It’s all positive, and I am beyond grateful for all these years.”
