This may be a strange time for TV, with production impacted by coronavirus-mandated shutdowns, schedules in flux and premiere dates uncertain. But people are also watching more TV than ever, in more forms than ever, thanks to network, cable, and the ever-proliferating variety of streaming platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus and Peacock.
Even as other rituals are affected by the pandemic, one annual tradition has stayed in place: once again this year, members of the Television Critics Association have selected nominees for the group’s annual TCA Awards.
The TCA includes more than 200 journalists and critics (including me) from the U.S. and Canada. Every year, we sort through the dramas, comedies, limited series, non-fiction series and more that stand out. We don’t always agree, but that’s not a surprise, considering the hundreds of shows there are to consider each year.
The nominees this year include “Watchmen,” “Ramy,” “The Mandalorian,” “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” “Unbelievable,” “The Morning Show,” and more. HBO earned the most nominations, with 16, followed by Netflix, with 10 nominations, and FX/FX on Hulu boasting seven nominations.
Here are the 36th annual TCA Awards nominees -- from among 2019-2020 season contenders -- as chosen by myself and my fellow members. Do you agree with our choices? We’ll be voting soon, and the winners will be announced later this summer.
