When it premiered in 2011, “Homeland,” which will air its series finale on Sunday, quickly established itself as one of TV’s most compelling series. A major theme of the show was, as executive producer Alex Gansa said during a discussion of the final season at the Television Critics Association winter 2020 press tour, “What the counterterrorism industry has done to us as a nation since 9/11.”
Bringing the themes to life were characters who were fascinating because of their conflicts and struggles. Claire Danes excelled as Carrie Mathison, a CIA officer who was passionate about her job, but was also struggling to cope with her bipolar disorder.
In Season 1, Carrie was convinced that Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), a U.S. Marine Corps sergeant who had been held as a prisoner of war by al-Qaeda, isn’t the returned hero he appears to be, but is actually a sleeper agent intent on committing a terrorist act in America.

The first two seasons were outstanding, though “Homeland” has been criticized for how it portrayed both characters from the Middle East, and the intelligence community. As Gansa said to TV reporters at the winter press tour, “When you’re taking flak from the right for being soft on terror, and you’re taking flak from the left for being Islamophobic, I think you’re in the right conversation. You’re doing the right thing. You’re causing people from both sides to attack you in a way for the same storyline.”
During its eight seasons, “Homeland” has had its ups and downs, but the core relationship, between Carrie and her mentor, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), has remained engrossing. Tonight’s series finale is titled “Prisoners of War,” the English-language title of the original Israeli series that inspired “Homeland," and the episode description doesn’t reveal much: “Saul and Carrie’s final mission comes to a conclusion.”
