As we sit at home during the coronavirus pandemic, TV has become even more of a welcome refuge for those with the sense to self-isolate.
I've asked around, just to see what people have been watching to pass the time. To no surprise, Tiger King mania isn't the only thing on people's minds and televisions.
Kristy Meanor, artistic director at the Wetumpka Depot, said she's been working her way through the American Film Institute's top 100 films. Her dog Rudy's been watching with her.
"He's getting all cultured on film, but truly he's a theater dog," Meanor said.
Jennifer Talley of Alabama River Region Ballet has gotten hooked on "Little Fires Everywhere" on Hulu. "Can't stop watching!" she said.
Sam Wallace is watching old episodes of "The Wild Wild West" from 1965, and said his wife enjoys reruns of "The Nanny" from the 1990’s. "I confess to watching with her and giggling hysterically from time to time," Wallace said.
Christian rapper Kyng T is sitting back watching "Spongebob Squarepants," and Shannon Fontaine (the man behind Montgomery's haunted hearse tours) said he's rewatching "The Sopranos" on HBO and "Poldark" on Amazon Prime.
"We completely binged 'Letterkenny,'" said Heath Fowler, a big fan of the Hulu series. "Really good stuff. Canadian rednecks. Hilarious show."
Several say they're watching are Netflix's "Ozark," "Money Heist," and "Lock and Key," and Fox's "Last Man Standing."
"'American Pickers' still get it done for me," said Montgomery musician Scott Grant.
Since you were so kind to share your favorites, I thought I'd share my top 11. (Really, I intended to make this a top 10 list, but just couldn't.) Oddly enough, no one else named a single one of my favorites:
1. The Masked Singer - This really fun, family show has become a staple of our Wednesday nights on Fox. The music is awesome, and the costumes are amazing. My wife should be on the show's panel. She keeps a running list of what stars she thinks they are, and she’s been really accurate so far. She’s known for weeks that Brett Michaels was the Banana.
2. Star Trek: Picard - I grew up on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," so it was amazing to see the story pushed forward with Picard in ways I hadn’t imagined it would go. I got CBS All Access just to watch this. I’m also a huge fan of "Star Trek: Discovery," also on CBS All Access, and think Sonequa Martin-Green is fantastic as Spock's sister Michael Burnham. Discovery is both a prequel to the original "Star Trek," and is about to launch itself further in to the future than any other Star Trek series. Dune in to see how they do it.
3. The CW Arrowverse shows from DC comics - Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman - I’d list the shows individually, but I watch them all and they’re one giant interlocking universe. Plus it would pretty much fill out my list by themselves. Thanks to Crisis on Infinite Earths, they’re all finally in the same universe. Anxiously awaiting the new shows set to come, especially DC’s Stargirl.
4. Evil - This show really surprised me. It’s about a small group of people working for the Catholic Church who are fighting evil, but it’s subtle and dark and amazing. Of special note to me is Mike Colter, who stars as David Acosta. I’ll probably always think of him as Luke Cage in Marvel's Netflix superhero series. "Evil" has a Montgomery connection also. Michael Emerson, the show’s villain, was an actor here years ago at Alabama Shakespeare Festival. If it weren’t for ASF, he probably wouldn’t have met his also really talented wife, actress Carrie Preston (True Blood, The Good Wife, Claws, etc.).
5. Tiger King - Yep, you knew it had to be in here somewhere. Imagine the weirdest people you’ve ever seen on the Jerry Springer Show. Throw in some tigers, drugs and murder plots and you’ve basically got this documentary covered. We binge watched the whole thing, and then watched the follow-up special “The Tiger King and I.” Frankly, I enjoy the parody songs people have been coming up with more than the documentary itself.
6. The Big Show Show - A surprisingly funny, well-done sitcom with retired WWE wrestler The Big Show. It’s on Netflix. We binge watched the series. He's actually really funny, and I like seeing him as a dad to three daughters.
7. Supernatural - If you haven’t seen this yet, watch it. There are 15 years worth of Sam and Dean Winchester kicking monster butt available. They've basically covered every kind of supernatural situation ever used in a horror movie, and even thrown in an animated adventure with Scooby Doo. The show is on it’s final year, but production for the last few episodes has stopped because of the virus. We'll all have to wait to see how it ends.
8. The Walking Dead - For goodness sakes, just call them zombies! Sheesh! This show where the living are much deadlier than the walkers is another favorite in our household. The AMC hit show's cast has changed a lot through the past decade, with a few shockingly drastic differences from the original comic book storyline. Honestly, I think my wife would shoot a crossbow bolt through our TV if they ever decided to kill off Norman Reedus' character Daryl Dixon. Of course, there's also the spinoff shows "Fear the Walking Dead" and the upcoming "The Walking Dead: World Beyond."
9. I Am Not Okay With This - Another Netflix series based off a comic book, and it’s really fun and amazing. Love watching star Sophia Lillis blow things up with her mind. We’ve also binge watched the whole first season.
10. The Mandalorian - This show is the one and only reason I susbcribed to Disney+. Love how it's set into the "Star Wars" universe, with a "Baby Yoda," who everyone may finally realize isn't the actual Yoda. But you'd better believe "The Child" is cute, or he'll mind choke you. Anxiously awaiting season 2, and I’ll probably be back on Disney+ when the Marvel shows “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “WandaVision” finally make it on there.
11. Marvel’s Agents of Shield - This is my favorite Marvel Comics TV series. It really broke ground with direct ties into the Marvel movies. They brought Phil Coulson back from the dead to make this show - then killed him again - then resurrected him in a couple of different fashions. Love the cast, and the fact that they brought in a version of Ghost Rider. Season 7, the final one, is supposed to come out May 27.
There are other Marvel TV series that I’ve watched, especially the ones on Netflix with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Punisher (and their Defenders mashup), and I really liked them. Not overly recommending them just just because I'm not thrilled at all about the way they the stories were all just left hanging when Netflix canceled them - especially Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Netflix should've had the decency to give shows a proper ending.
