Running out of Netflix and chill steam? All finished with your third re-watch of the "Tiger King" series? Here's this week's list of the best things to watch on TV.
Sunday, April 5
“Masterpiece: World on Fire” debut
9 p.m., PBS. First, catch the start of “ACM: Our Country” (8-10 p.m., CBS), with Nashville’s top stars performing from home. Then switch to this richly crafted, World War II epic, a seven-parter that leaves things hanging for a second season. At the core are three immensely likable people: A translator – rich, handsome and idealistic – meets two beauties, each working-class and steel-willed. In support, Helen Hunt is mostly wasted, but Sean Bean is superb as a dad who was shell-shocked in the previous war.
Monday, April 6
“Manifest” season-finale
10:01 p.m., NBC. The wedding day didn’t go well. Michaela wed Zeke shortly before his “death date,” chosen by a supernatural force. As he began to fade, escaped crooks stole her nephew Cal – who, like his aunt and dad, survived a plane flight that was suspended in time for five years. The result is a tense story of cops (including Michaela) and kidnappers, seasoned by other-worldly weirdness. The plot is fairly exciting, hindered by dome soap-style writing that’s filled with wildly overwrought moments.
Tuesday, April 7
“Schitt’s Creek” series finale
8 p.m., Pop, rerunning at 10. A small show on a tiny network has drawn loyal fans, fond reviews and an Emmy nomination for best comedy series. Last week, key questions were resolved: Moira and Johnny will move to California, where her show has been rebooted … Alexis goes to New York … David and Patrick are staying; now it’s their wedding. A series overview is at 8:32 and 10:32; at 9:30 and 11:30 is a very adult (and very funny) “One Day at a Time,” with some great work from Justina Machado.
Wednesday, April 8
“Modern Family” series finale
9 and 9:30 p.m., ABC. One of TV’s great shows departs after 11 seasons and 22 Emmys, five for best comedy series. The finale finds Mitchell and Cam settling into new lives, while Phil and Claire decide one of the kids must move out. Gloria is successful at work, but frets that her husband and son don’t need her. This is preceded at 8 p.m. by an overview and followed at 10 by a celebrity “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” Eric Stonestreet (Cam on “Modern Family”) and Will Forte play for charity.
Thursday, April 8
“Will & Grace”
9 p.m., NBC. No current show does big, broad comedy as well as this one. Under the expert direction of James Burrows, it knows when to throw in a sight gag … just as “I Love Lucy” did, 60 years ago. So now those two merge: Surrounded by craziness, Will says he feels like Ricky in a “Lucy” episode … but which person would be Lucy? In fantasy scenes (always with Will as Ricky), we see Grace giving a live-TV vitamin commercial … Karen stomping grapes ... and Jack as Lucy, in a chocolate factory.
Friday, April 10
“The Wizard of Oz” (1939)
8 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. With so many theaters closed, TV is our movie house … sometimes introducing us to the very best. “Oz” – No. 10 on the American Film Institute’s all-time list – has an ideal blend of childlike wonder and grown-up intelligence; a documentary overview is at 7. For more fun, there’s James Bond: HBO has Daniel Craig films at 5:45 and 8:10 p.m.; Epix has previous ones all day. And starting Wednesday (April 8), “Parasite” – the odd and fascinating Oscar-winner – is on Hulu.
Saturday, April 11
“The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel”
8-10:33 p.m., Lifetime. A sound has rippled through modern music, from Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to the “Idol” and “Voice” hopefuls. Soaring with riffs and runs, much of it goes back to gospel and, especially, the Clarks. That explains why Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige and Missy Elliott have combined to produce this film. Aunjanue Ellis plays Mattie Moss Clark, a trendsetting singer and director who molded her five daughters into a group that found mainstream success for gospel music.
