Read some of what Chris Fedor of cleveland.com wrote about how Cavaliers forward Kevin Love has embraced his sixth man role this season.

The scorching sun beamed down and glistened off a pair of gold-plated WWE championship belts draped over Kevin Love’s shoulders. Love had never been so happy.

That was nearly six years ago -- an enduring scene from the Cleveland Cavaliers’ championship parade, when 1.3 million crazed fans flooded the downtown streets and the franchise was at its zenith. That day, Love -- and every other player -- soaked in the adoration at the epicenter of a magical celebration 52 years in the making.

It hasn’t been the same since.

Kyrie Irving, part of Cleveland’s one-time breathtaking Big Three, demanded a trade in 2017, eventually getting shipped to Boston in what LeBron James called the beginning of the end of the Cavaliers’ dynasty. Shortly after, James followed, fleeing to Los Angeles and leaving Love as the lone remaining pillar of that title team -- a peculiar twist given those incessant trade rumors and his sometimes-wonky fit.

Despite those departures, Love signed a massive four-year, $120 million contract extension in the summer of 2018. He became the face of the post-LeBron era.

Injuries. Gossip. Temper tantrums. Public outbursts. Buyout speculation. On- and off-court clashes with various members of the organization. Trade desires. Declining production. Roster upheaval. Coaching changes. Losing streaks. Lottery trips. Discontent. Misery.

Love endured it all, causing a fervent fan base to turn on him.

But he’s finally found basketball glee once again -- as “Grandpa Kev,” the impactful Sixth Man of the Year candidate and seasoned leader of this young, connected group that’s shocked the NBA and rocketed into contention in the competitive Eastern Conference. Love’s been at the center of the turnaround, embracing a lesser role while helping set a tone of sacrifice, trust and teamwork.

“My happiness level is very high. It’s different than 2016 though,” Love told cleveland.com during a recent sit-down in Philadelphia. “When you win at that level, there’s nothing like it. I think 2016 was probably the best year of my life. But there’s just no preparing yourself to go from being on a championship-level team, winning a championship and going to the Finals four years in a row and then having to completely restart. Being around these guys is awesome. Great dudes. Unbelievable character guys. Being part of this has brought so much joy. It’s really fun.”

Cleveland’s renaissance mirrors Love’s.

“This is the next chapter and evolution of my career,” Love said. “I even said it when I was with Team USA that there would probably be a point in the next year or two where it’s going to be a pivot for me, but I knew I could still have an impact for many more years and I can still play at a very, very high level.”
