At Oscars 2022, CODA made history as the first film on a streaming service to win best picture. This landmark achievement signals that companies like Apple TV+ and Netflix will hold an important place in the awards race moving forward. And fittingly, each film to walk away from the 94th Academy Awards with a trophy—from Dune to Encanto—is already available to stream in some capacity.

Given our unprecedented access to all the Oscar–winning movies 2022, now is the perfect time to catch up on everything from the victorious short films to the lauded performances from Will Smith, Jessica Chastain, Troy Kotsur, and Ariana DeBose.

As the world continues to process this year’s unpredictable Oscars, here is where to catch each of the big winners from the telecast.

CODA, the intimate Sundance drama about growing up in the deaf community, won in all three of its nominated categories—best picture, Troy Kotsur for best supporting actor, and Sian Heder for best adapted screenplay. While accepting the night’s top honor, producer Philippe Rousselet thanked the film’s cast—which includes Kotsur, Marlee Matlin, Emilia Jones, Daniel Durant, and Eugenio Derbez—for making “such a wonderful and loving family onscreen, but also offscreen.”

Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel nearly swept the Oscars’ technical categories. The best-picture nominee won more Oscars than any other film Sunday night, including best production design, sound, cinematography, visual effects, editing, and original score for Hans Zimmerdespite Villeneuve’s snub in the best-directing category. Now available to stream on HBO Max, the epic stars Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Josh Brolin—many of whom are expected to return for Dune’s planned sequel.

Despite its field-leading 12 Oscar nominations, Netflix’s disruptive Western starring Benedict Cumberbatch won only a single trophy—best director for Jane Campion. She became only the third woman to win the category, following Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker and Chloé Zhao for Nomadland. Each of the film’s core actors received Oscar nominations, including Cumberbatch in best actor, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jesse Plemons in supporting actor, and Kirsten Dunst in supporting actress.

King Richard

Somehow, it was Will Smith’s second most major moment of the night when he won the best-actor Oscar for King Richard. An hour or so after Smith slapped Chris Rock onstage for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, he accepted the trophy in a display of raw emotion. “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” he began his speech, referencing his character and the real-life father of Venus and Serena Williams—as well as his own predicament.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

The biopic about evangelical television hosts Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker earned a pair of Oscar wins—one for makeup and hairstyling, and the other for Jessica Chastain’s lead performance. She acknowledged Tammy’s “radical acts of love,” particularly in the LGBTQ+ community, continuing, “For any of you out there who do, in fact, feel hopeless or alone, I just want you to know that you are unconditionally loved for the uniqueness that is you.”

While nominated in seven categories, Steven Spielberg’s celebrated reimagining of the classic musical won just a single trophy. With the best-supporting-actress Oscar for her performance as Anita, Ariana DeBose became the first openly queer performer of color to win an acting Academy Award. “Now you see why Anita says, ‘I want to be in America,’” DeBose said while accepting the honor. “Because even in this weary world that we live in, dreams do come true.” She later added, “To anybody who has ever questioned your identity…I promise you there is a place for us.”

Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Japanese film about grief and the transformative power of art won best international feature at the Oscars. During his acceptance speech, the filmmaker thanked his ensemble of actors, “especially Toko Miura, who drove the Saab 900 beautifully in the film.” The movie, now available to stream on HBO Max, was also nominated in best picture, directing, and adapted screenplay.

With live performances of two songs from the hit Disney film—Sebastián Yatra singing the nominated ballad “Dos Oruguitas” and Megan Thee Stallion joining the cast for a splashy rendition of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”—there was little doubt about its best-animated-feature victory. Unfortunately, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who penned the movie’s songs, was unable to attend the 94th Academy Awards due to a COVID-19 exposure, as he tweeted ahead of the telecast.

One would be forgiven for missing a few words of producer Questlove’s acceptance speech for best documentary feature, as the prize was bestowed just moments after the slap seen round the world. But as he accepted his award, the Grammy–winning musician was emotional. “This is such a stunning moment for me right now, but it’s not about me,” Questlove said. “It’s about marginalized people in Harlem that needed to heal from pain. Just know that in 2022, this is not just a 1969 story about marginalized people in Harlem.”

Belfast

After eight career nominations, Belfast writer-director Kenneth Branagh won his first Oscar for penning the film’s original screenplay. The filmmaker focused his semi-autobiographical project on a young boy’s childhood during the turbulent 1960s in Northern Ireland. “We will never forget all of those lost in the heartbreaking, heartwarming, human story of that amazing city of Belfast on the fabulous island of Ireland,” Branagh said onstage.

Centered on the largely untold story of Lusia Harris—the first and only woman officially drafted into the NBA—filmmaker Ben Proudfoot paid tribute to another player during his acceptance speech. He urged President Joe Biden to “bring Brittney Griner home.” Griner is a professional women’s basketball player who was detained at a Moscow–area airport for allegedly carrying vape cartridges containing hashish oil, and is currently being held in Russia.

Riz Ahmed earned his first Oscar, along with director-cowriter Aneil Karia, for their short about a family ripped apart by a far right militia. “In such divided times, we believe that the role of story is to remind us there is no ‘us’ and ‘them,’” Ahmed said during his speech. “There’s just ‘us.’”

Costume designer Jenny Beavan earned her third Oscar at the 94th Academy Awards. Wearing an ensemble that showcased the fight for pay equality, Beavan said during her speech that she nearly turned down the live-action Cruella. However, she was persuaded to take the job by a “team of the most phenomenal, creative, clever, generous, amazing people without whom obviously it wouldn’t have happened.” Beavan later thanked the film’s actors, adding, “I think Emma Thompson hyperventilating over some of her fittings with joy was one of the highlights of my career.”

The winners of his year’s best-animated-short Oscar were filmmakers Alberto Mielgo and Leo Sanchez Barbosa for their 15-minute tale of a man searching for answers about love in a cafe. “I’m very honored because this is just the beginning of what we can do with animation,” Mielgo said during their acceptance speech.
