On Thursday, Michigan rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat Colorado State in the NCAA Tournament opener. Survive and advance, right? Another win will put Michigan in the Sweet 16 -- again -- and give new hope an otherwise uneven season.
The 11 seed Wolverines face 3 seed Tennessee in a South Region second-round matchup on Saturday night. The Volunteers have lost just once since the calendar turned to February. They are talented and deep and make it difficult for opposing teams to run offense.
The Wolverines are capable of pulling off the upset, just as they showed in dominating Purdue on Feb. 10. Thing is, after that win, Michigan lost. Then won. Then lost. Then won. Then -- well, you get the idea. The trend has continued for 11 straight games now.
On Saturday, Michigan has to end that streak to keep its season alive and make another deep NCAA Tournament run.
Michigan has reached at least the Sweet 16 in each of the past four Tournaments. Only Gonzaga has a longer active streak. Michigan’s 22 NCAA Tournament wins since 2013 are the most in the country.
