Kasi Lemmons gives a jaw-dropping debut as writer/director with “Eve’s Bayou.” Set in the 1960s, the story follows a well-to-do Black family in Louisiana, lead by patriarch Samuel L. Jackson. He’s a doctor who’s always on the go, and over the course of one haunted summer, his family unravels a thick mystery involving trying secrets, darkness, and the existence of a witch who lives deep down in the bayou. Jurnee Smollett appears here, too, in a scorching central performance of horror and hope. This classic was named Roger Ebert’s No. 1 film of 1997, and its twists and turns still pack a powerful punch.
