Amblin Television is teaming with author Walter Mosley to bring the beloved character from his best-selling books to the screen.
The company behind FX's The Americans and Netflix's Haunting Of franchise is working with Mosley and Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) to executive produce the drama based on the gritty detective series that centers on Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins. A network/streaming service is not yet attached.
Easy, previously brought to life by Denzel Washington in the 1995 feature Devil in a Blue Dress and based on Mosley's book of the same name, is a Black World War II Army veteran turned hard-boiled private eye. The potential series will be set in 1950s Los Angeles and will honor the detective genre, while also exploring the racial inequalities and social injustice experienced by Black people and other people of color.
Mosley has authored more than 60 books, including 15 novels and a collection of shorts featuring the Rawlins character. The latest in the Rawlins saga, Blood Groove, was published earlier this month. On the TV side, Mosley's credits include FX's Snowfall and Apple's upcoming Samuel L. Jackson-led limited series The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, which he is adapting from his own novel. Mosley famously quit CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery after using the n-word in the writers room. He's repped by CAA, Gloria Loomis and Tom Selz.
White, who is slated to direct the potential pilot episode, previously worked with Amblin TV presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey on The Americans and an episode of their Apple anthology Amazing Stories. He's repped by UTA, Artists First and Morris Yorn.
Amblin senior vp TV Alex Maggioni will oversee for the company, which also counts Hulu's Animaniacs revival, Syfy's Resident Alien, Apple's Masters of the Air, Showtime's Halo and more.
