As the saying goes, it’s Netflix’s world and the other streaming platforms are just paying rent. The streaming behemoth has dominated the 2021 Golden Globes nods, leading all other platforms, including studios, broadcast and cable television, with an amazing 42 nominations total, in a year where almost every film in contention was released online. With more people stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, streaming networks capitalized on a captive global audience, capturing 69 total nominations across film and television on Wednesday; Netflix competitor Amazon among them, picking up 10 nominations, the most the company’s studio division has received since 2017.

This year’s nominations for Amazon were in part thanks to a diverse lineup, including: “One Night in Miami” (Regina King for Best Director, Leslie Odom Jr. for Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song); “Sound of Metal” (Riz Ahmed for Best Actor in a Drama); “Small Axe” (Best Limited Series, Best Supporting Actor for John Boyega); “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (Best Picture Musical or Comedy, Best Actor in Musical or Comedy for Sacha Baron Cohen; Best Actress in Musical or Comedy for Maria Bakalova); and the Jordan Peele-produced “Hunters” (Best Actor for Al Pacino). Every single one of these films and television series was streamed on the platform. Clearly, home viewing options are more bountiful than ever before, and this new monthly feature is designed to help readers sort through the deluge, specifically focusing on Black movies (old and new).

Per a 2020 report by the Motion Picture Association, ethnic groups generally watch more movies, and Hispanic/Latino and African-American/Black ethnic groups were more likely to stream content on mobile devices regularly. Additionally, a new study published in October 2020 from the UCLA-based Center for Scholars and Storytellers included key information on the single factor that could result in losses for studios: a lack of diversity. The study presented evidence that bringing diversity to film and television guarantees more eyeballs; conversely, a lack of diversity can result in the opposite.

So, going forward, each month, to address this wave of change, against the backdrop of a nationwide racial reckoning, IndieWire will publish a new list of Black films and television series worth checking out on major streaming platforms, starting with Amazon.

Here is our guide for February 2021.
