While flipping through news channels not long after the stay-at-home order, Karen Ripenburg was surprised to see the mistakes experts made while video chatting with the media. Distracted by poor lighting or bad backgrounds, the Tiburon resident couldn’t focus on what they were saying. And if she couldn’t, she knew others most likely weren’t either.

Inspired, Ripenburg decided to channel her skills as a veteran unscripted TV producer and media trainer to help executives, employees and others navigate the world of video chat and look professional and confident while doing so.

The founder of “How to Zoom Like a TV Producer” offers virtual consultations and classes, and also creates videos and articles on online video-themed topics such as how to ace an online job interview or Zoom video meeting.

The Vancouver, British Columbia, native and mother of two has created thousands of hours of television and video for people like Dr. Phil, celebrity chef Bobby Flay, Tori Spelling and Zach Galifianakis, and networks such as the Discovery Channel, HGTV, ABC and VH1.

Q How did you end up in the TV industry?

A I remember being pretty young and going to the Pacific National Exhibition state fair and the local news was broadcasting from the fair and I went to check it out. I got to sit at the newscaster desk and record a little video. Later, I traveled around the world, lived in England and went to school off-and-on and couldn’t figure it out and was like, wait, broadcast journalism. I enrolled in a fantastic program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. At the second-to-last internship at school, I was picking up the phones for news stories and every day I was sick to my stomach, because the news stressed me out. I decided to do my final internship at MTV News. It was in the United States. I got in my car and drove to Santa Monica, couch-surfed, lived in hotels and operated out of my car and did an internship at MTV News. I have always been a music fan and started networking and decided this is a pretty great place to be.

Q What drew you to the unscripted world?

A You’re not feeding people information. You’re not having people, actors, read lines. You are getting to the authentic story that people have to tell. Of course, in some shows we employ new tricks to elicit certain responses, but it essentially comes down to people telling a story. One of the biggest lessons I learned in school that I really carry with me today is that every story, to be watchable, has to have a focus.

Q What challenges have you faced?

A One of the most challenging shows I have done was when I was a field producer for a nationally syndicated show. I was flying into all these crazy scenarios around the country and you have to figure out what the story is on the ground. One time, I was at a nature camp, it was a kind of a scared-straight program, but going into it, I had no idea what I was doing. For TV production, it takes someone who is super flexible, can think on the fly and who is such a creative problem solver, because you never know what’s going to get thrown at you.

Q What are some of your pet peeves with video chat?

A Bad audio. And a lack of awareness of what the visuals look like. If someone has a lack of awareness of how they appear on video, it comes off that they just don’t care. I think it’s more often they don’t understand the impact that visuals have in communicating and they are not aware of how they are communicating by how they look. People still need to project that professionalism, even though we are all working from home.
