10 TV shows you may not have caught yet, but should - Lowell Sun

Still looking for ways to kill time while shut in? Turn on the TV and tune in to these.

I Am Not Okay With This (Netflix): A classic coming-of-age story about a young teenage girl … who discovers she has superpowers! “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” meets “Stranger Things” in this smart, edgy comedy. Sydney Novak (Sophia Lillis) deals with the ups and downs of high school, struggles with her sexuality, and strives to find the connection between her powers and her late father. TV-MA.

Pick of the Litter (Disney+): Becoming a seeing-eye dog is no easy feat. Just ask any of these smart and adorable canines as they work their way through the ranks to become qualified to help blind people. It’s an invigorating process, one with which most people might be unfamiliar. It can be challenging, emotional, and filled with surprises. You will find yourself cheering for the retrievers as they take their classes, learn new tricks and meet their new masters. All ages.

Raising Dion (Netflix): Parenting is hard. Parenting on your own is harder. And singlehandedly parenting a son who inherited your late husband’s superhero abilities? Impossible! But Nicole Warren (Alisha Wainwright) refuses to give up on her 7-year old son, Dion (Ja’Siah Young). Nicole, however, finds more questions than answers when she accepts help from an old family friend. TV-G.

The Act (Hulu): Mother doesn’t always know best. The shocking true story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard is brought to life in this award-winning miniseries. Gypsy (Joey King) has always lived under the watchful eyes of her mother, Dee Dee (Patricia Arquette). As far as Gypsy knows, her mom is the only one who knows how sick she is and how much care she needs. However, Gypsy’s life is turned upside down when she realizes she may not need as much help as Dee Dee claims. TV-MA.

The Boys (Amazon Prime): You know the old saying, “You shouldn’t meet your heroes because they may not be as great as they think you are”? Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid, son of, and bearing a strong resemblance to, Dennis Quaid) finds this out the hard way when his girlfriend is accidentally killed at the hands of a superhero. Unsure of how to exact revenge, Hughie reluctantly teams up with a group of vigilantes who are also determined to overthrow the superhero team known as The Seven. This humorous, action-packed adventure explores a universe where superheroes are just too overrated. TV-MA.

The Mandalorian (Disney+): There’s a lot more to this show than that adorable green alien. The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is a lone bounty hunter roaming a galaxy far, far away. He follows no rules save for his own, solely focusing on his assignments. But a new mission will put his abilities to the test and take him to places he has never been. Echoing the format of the original “Star Wars” trilogy, this show is formatted like a Western in outer space. TV-PG.

AMAZON PRIME

‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime): If I could summarize this award-winning show in just one word, that would be it: Marvelous! From the writers of “Gilmore Girls” comes a show-stopping comedy about a bright-eyed, outspoken Jewish woman (Rachel Brosnahan) who sets out to make a name for herself in the world of stand-up comedy. Midge Maisel knows that in 1960s New York City, stand-up isn’t a common profession for women her age. It’s also uncommon to have a female manager (Alex Borstein). And it’s also uncommon to fall in and out of love with your ex-husband. But is that going to stop the funny fashionista from speaking her mind? Absolutely not! TV-MA.

NETFLIX

‘The Umbrella Academy’

The Umbrella Academy (Netflix): A family of superheroes (Well, OK, one is without any powers) comes together over the death of their estranged father. As they bury the old man with almost no ill grievances, the family — they call themselves The Umbrella Academy, covering the world in safety — reunites to save the planet from evil. As danger lurks, the unsuspecting Vanya Hargreeves (Ellen Page) learns that a secret has been kept from her for a long time — a secret that could either help or harm the world she knows. TV-14.

The World According to Jeff Goldblum (Disney+): Jeff Goldblum is seemingly one of the nicest and most interesting celebrities in the world, so it was only a matter of time before we were blessed with a show all his own. This docu-series, produced by Disney and National Geographic, features Goldblum hand-selecting a topic that fascinates him immensely. From sneakers to tattoos, ice cream to BBQ, this is a program that will amuse, delight, educate and relax. After all, Goldblum’s voice can brighten anyone’s mood. TV-PG.

You (Netflix): Ever wonder how Ted Bundy would have committed his crimes if he had an iPhone? Wonder no more as you watch this captivating drama about a man who will do anything for the woman he loves. No, really! Anything! Believe me, I’m not exaggerating when I say Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is a dead ringer for Bundy! This twisted drama is enough to leave you speechless after every episode. Badgley’s chilling voice-over doesn’t help much, either. TV-MA.
