What’s on TV Saturday: ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ and ‘Funny Women’ - The New York Times

FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW (2019) 8 p.m. on HBO; stream on HBO platforms. We have come a long way since Vin Diesel and Paul Walker played Californian street racers in 2001’s “The Fast and the Furious.” The franchise has ballooned since then, and its latest offering is this spinoff. In “Hobbs & Shaw,” which takes place between “Fate of the Furious” (2017) and the upcoming “F9,” Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles from earlier “Furious” movies, reluctantly teaming up to keep a genetically enhanced supervillain (Idris Elba) from getting his hands on a deadly virus. Their mission ties in Shaw’s formidable sister (Vanessa Kirby), a rogue MI6 agent, and takes them to Chernobyl and then Samoa. The plot is hardly the point — the main attraction is the scathing banter between the leading men and the over-the-top, gravity-defying stunts. It may not be the strongest film in the saga, but it’s a fun escape.

SEASONAL WONDERLANDS 9 p.m. on BBC America. BBC America is introducing yet another nature series, focusing this time around on the transitions between seasons and how wildlife adapts to them. The actor Domhnall Gleeson (“Run”) narrates all three episodes. The first puts the lens on New England’s striking colors and the diverse inhabitants of its trees; the remaining two episodes highlight Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago, and Okavango, a river delta in Botswana.

MORE FUNNY WOMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE (2020) 10 p.m. on Showtime. Last year Showtime introduced “Funny Women of a Certain Age,” a standup special featuring “mature women” delivering very mature jokes. This new installment, headlined by Caroline Rhea of “Sabrina The Teenage Witch,” features comics including Carole Montgomery, who created “Funny Women,” and Julia Scotti, a transgender comic who was a quarter finalist on the 11th season of “America’s Got Talent.” The comedians don’t hold back. Expect hard truths and witty ruminations on aging, gender and generational differences.

JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT (2019) Stream on Amazon; rent on Google Play, Vudu or YouTube. The director and actor Kevin Smith satirizes the endless cycle of reboots and remakes in this road comedy, itself a reboot of Smith’s 2001 movie “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” Our protagonists, played by Jason Mewes and Smith, are on a familiar mission to stop the production of a reboot of “Bluntman and Chronic,” a film based on a comic book series inspired by the titular stoners. (Let that sink in.) Smith clearly targeted his loyal fans. He invites back old faces from the View Askew universe, such as Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Jason Lee, and, even while playing himself, pokes fun at his directing skills and past flops. Newcomers beware: ’90s nostalgia is sprinkled throughout (Method Man and Redman make an appearance), but there’s little else that keeps this afloat.
