Best things to watch on TV this week: March 29-April 4 - The Cincinnati Enquirer

Running out of Netflix and chill steam? Here's this week's list of your best things to watch on TV.

Sunday, March 29

“Gershwin Prize: Garth Brooks”

9-10:30 p.m., PBS. This prize has gone to music’s greats, starting with Pauls (Simon, McCartney) and Stevie Wonder. Now Brooks is the 11th winner, the second country person (after Willie Nelson) and the youngest. He’s 58 and has already sold 148 million albums in the U.S., second only to the Beatles. He performs in this concert (taped March 4), along with his wife Trisha Yearwood, plus Keith Urban, Chris Stapleton, Ricky Skaggs, Keb’ Mo, Lee Brice and the Howard University Chorus; Jay Leno hosts.

Monday

“The Good Doctor” season finale

10 p.m., ABC. Last week brought an extreme cliffhanger: Shaun was drowning, while his love life was in limbo. One doctor (Melendez) had a critical injury; another (Morgan) endangering herself. All of that began with an earthquake, creating chaos at a fundraiser. Shaun raced to save his sometimes-girlfriend Lea, but now is trapped with a victim … as water pours in. Melendez ignored his abdominal injuries, but now is throwing up. At the hospital, Morgan endangered her hands to save a patient.

Tuesday

“American Experience: Polio Crusade”

9 p.m., PBS. As the coronavirus crisis builds, two excellent reruns remind us that we’ve overcome previous terrors. “Influenza 1918” (on pbs.org) is a 1998 film about a two-year ordeal that killed 600,000 Americans. “Polio Crusade” is a 2009 film about the crisis that killed or paralyzed a half-million people a year in the 1940s and ‘50s. It brought a surge in medical philanthropy, research and rehabilitation. This is a moving story that includes the recollections of some of polio’s survivors.

Wednesday

“The Masked Singer”

8-10 p.m., Fox. Now things get serious, as the semi-finals begin. The early rounds dumped and unmasked many of the music pretenders, including a skateboarder (Tony Hawk), two TV hosts (Drew Carey, Tom Bergeron) and an almost-vice president (Sarah Palin). They also, surprisingly, dumped music greats Dionne Warwick and Chaka Khan. Half the contestants were dropped from each group of six. That leaves nine survivors, some quite talented, dressed as a kangaroo, banana, turtle and such.

Thursday

“Broke” debut

9:30 p.m., CBS. Maybe this is one of our new fears – broke relatives moving in with us. In NBC’s “Indebted,” the parents return; in this one, it’s an older sister whose husband has blown his money. Now, oddly, both are at 9:30 on Thursdays. “Indebted” is often loud and lame, but a sampling shows “Broke” could be quite good. Pauley Perrette (“NCIS”) plays the single mom and bar-owner whose sister (Natasha Leggero) arrives with her husband (Jaime Camil of “Jane the Virgin”) and his manservant.

Friday

“Hawaii Five-0” series finale

9 p.m., CBS. By TV standards, this has been around forever – 12 seasons for the original “Five-0,” 10 more for this reboot. Now it closes by bringing back key characters. There are flashbacks with three deceased people – Steve McGarrett’s father, the man who killed him (Victor Hesse) and the man who ordered it (Wo Fat). Now McGarrett finally solves the case that his father left him. Also, Wo Fat’s widow kidnaps and wounds Danny, trying to get the coded message sent by McGarrett’s late mother.

Saturday

“The Ten Commandments” (1956)

7-11:44 p.m., ABC. With Easter traditions dwindling this year, we can catch this one on TV. ABC tends to run this film on Easter eve; this year, it’s a week earlier. In its time, this epic – nominated for seven Oscars, including best picture – was steeply respected; by modern standards, it seems slow and stiff, but interesting. For light fun, “Frankie Drake Mysteries” (set in the 1920s) starts its season at 7 p.m. on the Ovation cable channel. The opener is a fairly good one that links Frankie with Agatha Christie.
