There’s an interesting distinction that separates Netflix’s popularity charts for movies and TV shows. A series has much more potential to go viral (much like Shadow and Bone did recently) and quickly rise up the yearly rankings. A movie, on the other hand, seems to have a much shorter shelf life on the Top 10 charts—which means, as the months go by, it’ll become harder and harder for any given film to rank as one of Netflix’s 25 most popular movies of the year.
Which is why, this week, I decided to expand the rankings to 30 slots. I determine this list based on Netflix’s Top 10 list, which ranks the most popular movies on the streaming service each day. I then assign points to films based on where they rank on that list, and keep track of each movie’s score over the course of the year.
So how do the rankings look this week? As of May 22, these are the 30 most popular movies on Netflix in 2021 (newcomers are bolded):
- We Can Be Heroes - 355 points
- The Secret Life of Pets 2 - 231 points
- The Mitchells vs. The Machines - 209 points
- Thunder Force - 187 points
- Yes Day - 176 points
- Bigfoot Family - 171 points
- I Care a Lot - 169 points
- The Little Rascals - 167 points
- War Dogs - 139 points
- Finding ‘Ohana - 138 points
- Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted - 137 points
- The Vanished - 124 points
- To All the Boys: Always and Forever - 118 points
- Homefront - 115 points
- Synchronic - 113 points
- 17 Again - 109 points
- Outside the Wire - 109 points
- The Dark Knight - 102 points
- Deadly Illusions - 97 points
- Stowaway - 94 points
- Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal - 93 points

Even the expansion of the list didn’t bring us any newcomers—but there was one movie that came very close. The Woman in the Window had spent its first seven days on Netflix in the #1 position on the Top 10 charts (today the movie relinquished the top spot to Army of the Dead), making it just the tenth movie to ever pull off that feat (and the third movie to do so in 2021). That brings the film’s score to 79 points—just four points shy of joining the Top 30. If the thriller can continue that kind of success, then we can expect The Woman in the Window to rise pretty far up these rankings by next week.
But perhaps the most notable jump belongs to The Mitchells vs. The Machines, which has achieved the third-place position after just 22 days on Netflix. The animated film’s 211-point total quickly passed Thunder Force this month, which marks a significant milestone: because We Can Be Heroes premiered in late 2020, and because The Secret Life of Pets 2 has sporadically appeared on the charts dating back to last year, that means The Mitchells vs. The Machines is now officially Netflix’s most successful new release in 2021.
The other movie that made a big move this week was Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, which has now spent its first 21 days on Netflix on the daily Top 10 charts. Last week, the film sat in the 17th place position. But this week, the animated feature managed to climb six spots into the #11 slot.
These rankings will continue to be updated weekly, so stay tuned next week to see which movies have moved up and down the list.
