Netflix has had a handful of hit movies this year, including flicks like Yes Day, I Care a Lot and Outside the Wire. And now the world’s biggest streaming service can add another blockbuster to the list: Thunder Force. The superhero movie starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer had a huge week that allowed it to quickly move up the popularity rankings for 2021.
And how are these yearly charts determined, you ask? Each day, I track where each movie ranks on Netflix’s Top 10 charts. I then dole out points accordingly and track each film’s performance over a longer period of time.
Which brings us to the 2021 list. As of April 19, these have been the 25 most popular movies on Netflix this year (the bolded selections are newcomers to this list):
- We Can Be Heroes - 353 points
- Yes Day - 176 points
- The Secret Life of Pets 2 - 174 points
- Bigfoot Family - 171 points
- I Care a Lot - 169 points

As previously mentioned, Thunder Force is the biggest new addition to the 2021 charts. The superhero movie became just the 15th film to spend seven consecutive days in the #1 position, and just the fourth movie to do so in 2021. In just ten days, Thunder Force has managed to capture its 95 points, which means we can fully expect the film to enter the Top 10 within the next week.
There were three other newcomers to the 2021 charts. The Little Rascals has the most promise, as today the children’s movie marked its 12th consecutive appearance on the Top 10 charts. Given its current momentum, I would fully expect The Little Rascals to continue its climb and break into the Top 10 very soon.
The same cannot be said of the other two films, however. Despite their first-place showings on the daily charts, both Bad Trip and Concrete Cowboy have already exited the daily rankings. Concrete Cowboy spent two days in the top spot, while Bad Trip became the other of the four movies to capture at least seven consecutive days in the #1 position.
Beyond that, the 2021 rankings are virtually the exact same as they were on April 3 (which was the last time I updated this list). The only noticeable difference is that The Secret Life of Pets 2 added four more points to its score and inched a little closer to capturing the second-place position from Yes Day.
There were four total casualties this week. The movies that exited the 2021 rankings includes Penguins of Madagascar (which currently has 83 points), Training Day (78 points), All About the Benjamins (77 points) and Moxie (75 points).
These rankings will continue to be updated weekly, so stay tuned next week to see which shows have moved up and down the list.
