The 25 Most Popular Movies On Netflix In 2021 - Update: April 3 - Forbes

maleomales.blogspot.com

For a large portion of the year, some familiar films have sat atop the rankings for the most popular movies on Netflix in 2021: We Can Be Heroes, War Dogs, Bigfoot Family and I Care a Lot, to name a few. But this past week catapulted two new movies into the top four positions, which means we have a much different looking Top 25 than compared to last week.

How is the Top 25 determined, you ask? Well, I record where each movie places on Netflix’s Top 10 list and assign points accordingly. Then over a longer period of time, I add up those points and track where each film moves. Because Netflix doesn’t release viewership data on its programs, this is the closest we get to day-by-day reflections of which movies are dominating the Netflix platform.

Which brings us to the 2021 charts. As of April 3, these have been the 25 most popular movies on Netflix this year:

  1. We Can Be Heroes - 353 points
  2. Yes Day - 176 points
  3. Bigfoot Family - 171 points
  4. The Secret Life of Pets 2 - 170 points
  5. I Care a Lot - 169 points
  6. War Dogs - 139 points
  7. Finding ‘Ohana - 138 points
  8. The Vanished - 124 points
  9. To All the Boys: Always and Forever - 118 points
  10. Homefront - 115 points
  11. 17 Again - 109 points
  12. Outside the Wire - 109 points
  13. The Dark Knight - 102 points
  14. Deadly Illusions - 97 points
  15. Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal - 93 points
  16. Good Burger - 91 points
  17. Unknown - 90 points
  18. Parker - 90 points
  19. Savages - 88 points
  20. The Next Three Days - 88 points
  21. The Dig - 87 points
  22. Penguins of Madagascar - 83 points

There actually weren’t any new additions to the Top 25 this week. As the year carries on, it will become harder and harder to break onto the yearly charts.

There were a few movies that came close, however. Today, Bad Trip enjoyed its seventh consecutive showing atop the daily charts, which brings the comedy’s score total to 70 points. We also can’t forget about Seaspiracy, whose score stands at 65 points, and Secret Magic Control Agency, whose total now stands at 67 points.

All three of those movies premiered this past week on Netflix—and all three are on the verge of catching Moxie. As of today, Bad Trip owns the 26th-place position, while Secret Magic Control Agency has claimed 28th place and Seaspiracy sits in 31st place. It’s very likely that at least two of those movies (if not all three) will find their ways onto the 2021 charts within a few days.

The biggest news of the week, however, is that new movies have claimed the #2 and #4 positions on the yearly rankings. Yes Day has been quickly making its way up the charts ever since its March 12 premiere—a run that has included ten days in the first-place position on the daily charts (a feat only three other movies have achieved on Netflix). And thanks to another stellar week, the Jennifer Garner comedy went from seventh place last week to second place this week on the yearly rankings. The film’s 176 points are also good enough for 17th place on the all-time charts, just behind The Old Guard and Project Power.

The film that now owns the #4 position on the yearly charts might surprise you: The Secret Life of Pets 2. While it’s not a Netflix film, the animated comedy has benefitted from longevity over the course of its Netflix stint. In total, The Secret Life of Pets 2 has seen 93 days on the Top 10 charts dating back to August 2020 (with 51 of those days coming in 2021). Because of its strong legs, The Secret Life of Pets 2 has inched closer and closer to the top spot on the 2021 charts.

Other significant movement includes Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal, which catapulted from 25th place to 15th place; Deadly Illusions, which jumped from 22nd last week to 14th place this week; and Savages, which went from 23rd place to 19th place.

These rankings will continue to be updated weekly, so stay tuned next week to see which movies have moved up and down the list.
