Google just refreshed its Chromecast streaming device to add 4K with HDR10 and Dolby Vision support, as well as finally giving it a remote control and menu system. It costs $49.99, but there is a way to grab one for free by spending your money on a streaming service instead.
As The Verge reports, Google is offering a deal as a way of promoting both the new Chromecast With Google TV and YouTube TV. If you choose to sign-up for YouTube TV, Google will send you a Chromecast for free. In order to be eligible, you must be a new YouTube TV subscriber and make one valid payment for the service between Oct. 15 and Dec. 31 this year. It's also only open to consumers in the US.
YouTube TV certainly isn't cheap, costing $64.99 per month after a recent price hike. However, as the terms of the deal make clear, you only need to pay for one month in order to qualify for the free Chromecast. So instead of paying $50 for the device, you're paying $65 for the device and a month of content. Obviously Google hopes you like YouTube TV enough to continue subscribing after that, but there's no obligation to.
Another reason to try YouTube TV using this offer is the new Chromecast's Live tab, which only works with YouTube TV. As our review of the Chromecast explains, "this tab incorporates the live TV service of YouTube TV into the menu system itself, showing the top shows currently available, followed by a grid-based program guide."
If you intend to take advantage of this offer, once your valid payment has been processed by Google a promotional link will be sent to you for use on the US Google Store to get the Chromecast. Be sure to use the link before 11:59pm PST on Feb. 28 next year, though, as after that it stops working.
