What’s Streaming
HOOPS Stream on Netflix. This new animated comedy series opens with an eruption: Ben Hopkins, a high school basketball coach and the show’s main character, lays into a referee who made a call he didn’t like, with a string of insults that aren’t printable here. After the game, Ben (voiced by Jake Johnson) apologizes to his team. “It’s OK, coach,” a young player responds, “it was actually one of your funnier meltdowns.” The show follows Ben’s efforts to reverse his struggling team’s fortunes. It was created by the comic and musician Ben Hoffman, who releases country music as Wheeler Walker Jr. Hoffman’s 2016 debut album was called “unfathomably obscene” by Rolling Stone — so expect Coach Ben to spew plenty more vitriol as he whips the team into shape.
THE FUNGIES Stream on HBO Max. For a new animated show that’s family-friendly, turn instead to “The Fungies.” Set in prehistoric times, the series, created by the writer and animator Stephen P. Neary, follows the young, anthropomorphic mushroom students of Fungietown Elementary, centering on a science-loving pupil named Seth. Originally intended for Cartoon Network, the show ended up going directly to HBO’s streaming platform, where it debuted earlier this week.
THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN (2020) Stream on Disney Plus. In this new movie, Sam Rockwell voices a large primate with an artistic eye. The film follows Ivan (Rockwell), a gorilla who performs as part of a mall circus and has an offstage passion for painting. Other members of the circus include an elephant voiced by Angelina Jolie, a poodle voiced by Helen Mirren, a pooch voiced by Danny DeVito and a rabbit voiced by the comedian Ron Funches. They perform under the ringmaster Mack (Bryan Cranston), who eventually decides to capitalize on Ivan’s painting prowess. The movie is based on the children’s book of the same name, which was inspired by a true story. Disney’s adaptation, Ben Kenigsberg wrote in his review for The New York Times, will feel familiar even to those who haven’t read the book. “A blend of live action, computer animation and well-integrated motion capture effects (though the occasional boredom of the plot may inspire you to look for the seams), ‘The One and Only Ivan,’ streaming on Disney+ and directed by Thea Sharrock, brings a fair amount of heart to a generic story line,” he wrote.
