The calendar shift follows the trend of the Oscars, Golden Globes and other major ceremonies that have moved later into 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
AARP The Magazine's Movies for Grownups Awards will now include a number of TV categories.
The 2021 celebration of high-quality film talent for the over 50 audience will also recognize the best TV series for grownups, best movie made for TV or limited series for grownups and best actor and actress on TV.
“The growth in streaming in recent years has been fueled in large part by smart, superbly produced, directed and acted content that speaks to a grownup audience,” AARP's vp, Movies for Grownups, Heather Nawrocki, said in a statement. “It’s time to recognize the groundswell of excellent streaming and television programming and the grownup audience that’s consuming it. AARP’s Movies for Grownups initiative has long sought to fight ageism in the entertainment industry by spotlighting and encouraging the creation of great content for and about older adults.”
With the addition of four TV categories, the Movies for Grownups Awards joins the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Critics' Choice Awards and numerous other trophyfests in recognizing content on the small screen as well as the big screen in ceremonies that traditionally take place over the winter months leading up to the Oscars. But like these other awards shows, the Movies for Grownups Awards is moving later in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2021 Movies for Grownups Awards will take place on March 4.
