The 2020 MLB Draft -- officially known as the First-Year Player Draft or the Rule 4 Draft -- starts Wednesday, June 10, and will span just five rounds across two days. MLB shortened the draft from the usual 40 rounds down to only five rounds as a cost-cutting move amid the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Baseball America, teams will save about $3.4 million on average.
The Detroit Tigers went 47-114 last season and, as a result, they hold the top overall pick for the second time in three years and the third time in franchise history. They used the No. 1 pick in the 1997 draft on Rice closer Matt Anderson. In 2018, they selected Auburn righty Casey Mize with the No. 1 pick. Mize is now one of the top pitching prospects in the game.
MLB was originally planning to conduct the draft in Omaha, Nebraska, site of the College World Series, but that won't happen because of the pandemic. The draft will instead be held remotely and it will be broadcast on multiple networks for the first time ever. Here are the broadcast details for the 2020 MLB draft:

This draft class is regarded as especially deep in pitching, especially college pitching, with a strong collection of catchers as well. The draft is considered light on potential impact middle infielders, however.
Latest mock draft
In our latest mock draft we have the Tigers selecting Arizona State slugger Spencer Torkelson with the No. 1 pick. That is hardly a lock at this point, however. Detroit could change gears should another player express a willingness to take a below-slot bonus.
