Thomas Miller, a producer instrumental in the creation of hit television shows including “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley” and “Full House” along with films “Silver Streak” and “Foul Play,” died Sunday at age 79.

The cause of death was complications from heart disease, according to Warner Bros., his longtime producing home. He died at his home in Connecticut.

Mr. Miller was best known with his professional and personal partner, Robert Boyett, for developing family-style television comedies. Successful shows launched by Miller/Boyett Productions included “Family Matters,” “Full House,” “Perfect Strangers” and “Step by Step,” all of which were staples of ABC’s prime-time lineup in the 1980s and 1990s.

A Milwaukee native, Mr. Miller came to Los Angeles in 1962 and landed a job as a dialogue coach for film director Billy Wilder. He worked on several of the director’s classics, including “The Fortune Cookie.” He then took executive jobs in television at Twentieth Century Fox and Paramount Studios, where he oversaw the development of several hits, including “The Odd Couple” and “Love American Style.”

After leaving Paramount to become a producer, Mr. Miller founded a company with Edward Milkis. Along with producer Garry Marshall, they were part of the team behind the ABC hits “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley” and “Mork & Mindy.” Miller-Milkis Productions also made the hit theatrical movies “Silver Streak” with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder and “Foul Play” with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase.

Mr. Miller then teamed up with Mr. Boyett, who had worked on “Happy Days.” Miller/Boyett became a hit factory for production company Lorimar Television, which was later acquired by Warner Bros. Most of their shows were for ABC, but the pair also produced “The Hogan Family” for NBC, which ran for several years.

Mr. Miller pivoted to theater in his later years and won a Tony Award for “War Horse.” He and Mr. Boyett were also involved in “Fuller House,” the Netflix reboot of “Full House.”

He is survived by Mr. Boyett.
