CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The dispute between YouTube TV and Sinclair is leaving some Indians fans in the dark.
Sinclair, the owner of the Tribe’s cable home SportsTime Ohio, announced Thursday it had reached a deal to keep 19 of its 21 Fox-branded regional sports networks on the streaming service. The news was met with relief by Indians fans as well as Cavaliers fans who watch games on Fox Sports Ohio. But later, in a statement of its own confirming the agreement, YouTube TV posted a series of tweets that were more cryptic about the terms.
“We reached a deal that will keep RSNs for many of our members,” one of the tweets read. Another said, YouTube TV would “continue carrying FOX RSNs in select areas.”
The thought was, at least initially, the “members” and “select areas” being excluded referred to subscribers in New York City and Los Angeles since Sinclair had already announced YES Network and Fox Sports West/Prime Ticket were not part of the deal. But it didn’t take long for out-of-town Indians fans to realize they were being left out, too.
cleveland.com received messages from YouTube TV subscribers in Columbus and Youngstown, saying they received a notification that SportsTime Ohio had been dropped. Toledo also appears to be affected. Indeed, YouTube essentially confirmed this in a tweet late Thursday.
“Unfortunately, some FOX RSNs that were retained will be inaccessible to some users in certain zip codes,” the post said. “If your area is impacted by a channel loss, you’ll be notified in the YouTube TV app soon. You can also check which channels you have access to here: tv.youtube.com/welcome”
According to the YouTube TV channel finder, it appears SportsTime Ohio is now only available primarily in the Cleveland-Akron-Canton area.
Indians fans aren’t the only baseball fans impacted by the new regional restrictions. Reds fans in neighboring states have also complained on social media about losing Fox Sports Ohio on YouTube TV.
cleveland.com has reached out to Sinclair for comment.
In the meantime, if you lost either SportsTime Ohio or Fox Sports Ohio, the networks remain available on streaming services like Hulu + Live TV, AT&T TV Now and AT&T TV, in addition to a number of cable systems across Ohio.
