What’s on TV
YESTERDAY (2019) 8 p.m. on HBO; stream on HBO platforms. This Beatles-themed romantic comedy from the director Danny Boyle (“Trainspotting”) begins when Jack (Himesh Patel), a struggling singer-songwriter, gets hit by a bus during a mysterious global blackout. Suddenly — and with little explanation as to why — the Beatles have been wiped from history, and Jack is the only one who remembers them. So he does what any desperate artist would do. He performs and takes credit for their songs, becoming a rock star overnight. But a familiar lesson arises: Fame can’t buy love after all. The movie opened to mixed reviews last summer. Some critics said it’s best enjoyed if not taken too seriously, while others, like The New York Times’s A.O. Scott, said the plot could have dug deeper. “‘Yesterday’ is more of a novelty earworm than a classic,” he wrote. “It wasn’t made to last.”
THE SHOP: UNINTERRUPTED 10 p.m. on HBO; stream on HBO platforms. Hosted by Maverick Carter, LeBron James’s childhood friend and business partner, this talk show gathers big names in sports, business and entertainment for a no-holds-barred round-table discussion in a barber shop. This new episode features seven guests, including the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the actor Chadwick Boseman and the rapper Roddy Ricch, who discuss their various industries and the basketball star Kobe Bryant’s legacy, with occasional comedic relief from the actor Tiffany Haddish.
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE 11:30 p.m. on NBC. Last week, “Saturday Night Live” addressed the coronavirus in a cold open with several cast members, along with the host, John Mulaney, and guest appearances by Larry David, Fred Armisen and Rachel Dratch. Now the virus has become more than fodder for jokes: The upcoming James Bond flick “No Time to Die,” which was set to open in April, is now opening in November because of coronavirus concerns. But its star, Daniel Craig, had already been set to host this weekend’s episode, making it a very early promotion for the movie. The cast will most likely find a way to work the awkward schedule into their skits. Craig will be joined by the musical guest The Weeknd, who released a short film this week ahead of the upcoming album “After Hours.”
