Quaran-TV: What to Stream to Soothe Your Coronavirus Anxiety - Vanity Fair

It is, as we all know, a pretty bad time to be a person in this world. But hey: At least we’ve got Netflix. And Hulu. And Amazon Prime. And Disney+. And any number of other streaming platforms (and good old-fashioned cable TV!), all primed and ready to numb our frantic brains with the best anti-anxiety programming that entertainment has to offer. So what, specifically, should you watch to try to take your mind off of...you know, everything? Vanity Fair’s staffers have a few ideas.

The West Wing. The West Wing! You must watch The West Wing. Gorgeous competence at the top. People in charge who want desperately to do good. Moving monologues that make you cry out your eyeholes. Enormous ’90s suits. The best part is that they talk so fast, you have to stop scrolling through Instagram and Twitter or else you lose the thread. The West Wing!!! —Kenzie Bryant

Here’s a thing to note up front about Julie & Julia: It’s a 9/11 movie. Julie (played by Amy Adams, wearing a crime-against-wigs hairpiece) works in Lower Manhattan fielding trauma calls from residents who lost their loved ones in the terrorist attacks (there’s even an early, sad montage of her daily life). So maybe the film, which is set in 2002, doesn’t totally work as a salve during these troubled, unnerving times. At least at first. But once the story engine revs up, and Julie decides to cook her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking for an entire year, the film becomes a breezy delight, made all the more enticing by Meryl Streep’s hammy, kindhearted portrayal of Child. Stream it now on Netflix. —Christopher Rosen

Though actual ingredients may be in short supply in your home at the moment, why not virtually hone your cooking skills by watching the myriad food videos on YouTube? My stalwart favorites are from V.F.’s sister publication Bon Appétit, naturally. Beyond those food Tube megastars, there are effortlessly hip Brooklyn home chef Alison Roman’s amiable recipe videos, the geeky experimenting of Binging With Babish, and the quick hits on Tasty, whose culinary-hack inventions may not always be practical in the real world, but are very fun to watch take shape. —Richard Lawson

I’ve been watching The Golden Girls on Hulu! Also Spinning Out on Netflix, with January Jones. —Sarah Shoen

Before the 90 days, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Arrested Development...not sure how much that gives me away as a non-TV person living under a rock. —Neelum Khan

If you want a reminder that the show must go on, it’s a great idea to watch movies about shows going on. Which is why my household is exclusively streaming movie musicals featuring people wearing corsets (Chicago, Moulin Rouge, Burlesque). They’re a reminder that, even in times of crisis, we can count on love, show tunes, and Cher to see us through. —Alyssa Karas

I’ve been bouncing between “bad” rom-coms (sweeping Irish landscapes in Leap Year are a much-needed reminder of the outside world) and reruns of Brooklyn Nine-Nine (pure comfort, as always). And when I need a dose of reality—but one that doesn’t include coronavirus—I watch an episode of Hillary, Nanette Burstein’s new four-part Clinton documentary. All available on Hulu. —Jaime Archer

Hillary. Just to make myself feel extra sad, angry, frustrated, what-if-y at this rather desperate moment. But Nanette Burstein’s interviews with Clinton are also illuminating and, insofar as the conversations depict perseverance and persistence, actually quite hopeful. It’s also invigorating and galvanizing to watch this specific look-back on 2016 as we head into what will be a wild election and an even more urgent need for change. —Claire Howorth
