Late Night TV Shows Pause Production Due To Coronavirus - wgbh.org

Many television shows have halted production in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19. Television expert Bob Thompson spoke with Boston Public Radio on Monday about the effect this television hiatus is having on viewers.

"There's well over a hundred at this point that have halted productions and I suspect we're going to see a lot more of that — including the late night shows," he said. "They had a very brief moment at the end of the week where they went to no live audiences but then they all announced that they were going on suspension at least until the end of the month, and that will probably be longer."

Late night shows provide comfort and commentary to viewers at home, Thompson said.

"These late night shows are really important parts of the conversation," he said. "I think to all of a sudden have all of that commentary and analysis halt, I think we are really going to miss it."

Bob Thompson is a founding director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture and a trustee professor of television and popular culture at Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
