The show must go on? Late-night television shows went without live studio audiences Thursday night, creating an eerie viewing experience with much less laughter.
“As of this morning, we planned to do a show with a full audience but as the day progressed and the more we thought about it, we and NBC decided it would be smarter to not have an audience and do our part to help decrease the spread of the coronavirus,” Jimmy Fallon said on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.”
“Welcome to ‘Late Night’ Casual Thursday,” Seth Meyers joked, performing his opening monologue without a jacket and tie.
“Only people in the audience are some members of my staff,” Stephen Colbert said on CBS’ “The Late Show" during a rehearsal that ended up becoming the broadcast version.
Variety reports NBC will suspend “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers" for two weeks to prevent further spread of the coronavirus, and CBS said “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will be on hiatus through March 30. All three shows originally planned to have audiences Thursday night, but shifted plans after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Broadway would shut down and banned all gatherings of more than 500 people in New York state.
And it’s not just New York TV taking drastic steps, either. HBO’s Bill Maher will also forego an audience in Los Angeles this week and former Democratic presidential candidate and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg guest-hosted ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in an empty theater, save for a few of the show’s staffers and Buttigieg’s husband Chasten.
“Everyone is spread apart at the CDC-recommended distance,” Buttigieg said Thursday night. “The experts have told us that the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to physically stay apart.”
There was much less laughter and applause, changing the tone of each show, but musical guests like The Roots and Jon Batiste did their best to fill the empty air with cheers and exaggerated chuckles. Buttigieg showed a clip of a crowd at a political rally.
“When you don’t have a real audience, you have to fake one. Just like Trump’s inauguration,” Mayor Pete joked.
