The TV pilot season is coming to an end, and there’s a definite trend on the primetime horizon — plenty of reboots and revivals.
In the “everything old is new again” vein, the networks have lined up returns (in various iterations) of blast-from-the-past TV shows (and a few movies) that viewers will see soon enough. Here’s a handy scorecard of the more noteworthy pop-culture relics that will be shaking off the cobwebs and emerging in new forms.
“Walker, Texas Ranger” (The CW)
Hot off of a whopping 15-season run on “Supernatural,” Jared Padalecki will star in a reboot of the classic CBS series (1992-2001) starring Chuck Norris as Cordell Walker, a Dallas-based member of the Texas Rangers known for kicking butt and taking names with sidekicks Frances Gage (Judson Mills) and Jimmy Trivette (Clarence Gilyard). The CW series, “Walker,” will follow the titular character (Padalecki), a widower and father of two who returns home to Austin after a stint undercover. He reconnects with his kids, investigates the circumstances around his wife’s death and bonds with his new partner — one of the Texas Rangers’ first female rangers (played by Lindsey Morgan from “The 100”).
“Thirtysomething” (ABC)
The original ABC weeper, which from 1987 to 1991 and racked up 41 Emmy nominations, followed a group of friends in their 30s living in Philadelphia. Series creators Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskowitz will return for the reboot, along with four original cast members reprising their roles: Ken Olin (Michael Steadman), Mel Harris (Michael’s wife, Hope Murdoch), Timothy Busfield (Elliot Weston) and Patricia Wettig (Eliot’s wife, Nancy). The new show, which is billed as a “sequel series” called “Thirtysomething(else),” will follow their children, who are now in their 30s, including Ethan Weston (Patrick Fugit), and Hope and Michael’s kids Janey (Odette Annable) and Leo (Chris Wood).
“The Equalizer” (CBS)
The original series, which aired on CBS fro 1985-89, starred Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a former intelligence agent who uses his skills to help innocent people who are in hot water. It’s also been a 2014 big-screen movie starring Denzel Washington as McCall (with a 2018 sequel). In the gender-reversal reboot, Queen Latifah will play a mysterious character who uses her skills to help people who have nowhere else to go. Lourraine Touissant co-stars.
“The Lost Boys” (The CW)
The original “Lost Boys” movie (1987), a horror-camp classic vampire flick, starred Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Haim, Jason Patric, Corey Feldman and Alex Winter. Its plot followed a pair of brothers (played by Patric and Haim) who move with their mother (Dianne Wiest, “Parenthood”) to a mysterious seaside town filled with vampires. The reboot will follow Jackie (Rochelle Ayetes, “Mistress”) and her teen sons Garrett (Branden Cook, “Industry”) and Levi, who move to a seaside town filled with teens who never age. One guess as to why.
“Gossip Girl” (HBO Max)
The original “Gossip Girl” hasn’t been off the air long (it aired from 2007 to 2012), but that’s not stopping the reboot series from chugging along. While the original followed the lives of wealthy teens on Manhattan’s Upper East Side (and made stars of Blake Lively, Penn Badgley and Leighton Meester), the reboot will be set eight years after the original, following a new generation of private school teens in New York. Kristin Bell, who narrated the original, will return as the narrator. Emily Alyn Lind (“Code Black”) is the first announced star, playing new character Audrey. Does this mean there could be cameos from the original cast members? When co-creator Josh Schwartz spoke to The Post this summer, he said, “We loved working with all of them and if they want to come back, we would be super-excited about that.”
“The Mighty Ducks” (Disney+)
The original “Mighty Ducks” franchise followed a scrappy youth hockey team of underdogs, and their lawyer/coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez). The franchise spurred three films (1992, 1994 and 1996) and an animated series (1997 on ABC). For the upcoming live-action sequel series, Estevez will reprise his role of Coach Bombay. The series will be set in current day Minnesota, where the Ducks have evolved from a team of underdog misfits to a powerhouse youth team. When 12-year-old Evan (Brady Noon) gets cut from the Ducks, he and his mom Alex (Lauren Graham, “Gilmore Girls”) build their own scrappy team.
