As summer rages on, Netflix is offering a month’s worth of new reasons to stay indoors. The era of peak TV continues in earnest with the release of several splashy series. The Sandman, based on Neil Gaiman’s superhero graphic novel, debuts on August 5. It’s joined by the final season of Mindy Kaling’s teen dramedy Never Have I Ever on August 12 and Selling Sunset spinoff, Selling The OC on August 24. Sprinkled throughout the month are buzzy documentaries—August 9’s shrewdly-titled I Just Killed My Dad—and even a Bar Mitzvah-themed movie musical, August 12’s 13: The Musical.
In what is perhaps a strange content coincidence, this month both Jamie Foxx and Kevin Hart will headline movies in which they play fathers. Foxx stars as a vampire-hunting patriarch in August 12’s Day Shift and Hart as a stay-at-home dad blowing off steam in August 26’s Me Time.
Here’s what else is coming to Netflix in August:
In the months after all three Peter Parkers—Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire—convened for last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, interest in revisiting past versions has surged. Netflix capitalized on the franchise’s virality, tweeting a meme of Maguire’s Parker and Kirsten Dunst as his Mary Jane Watson to announce the trilogy’s arrival. Cue the online debates about which early-aughts Spider-Man villain was the worst and why Spider-Man 3 is Sam Raimi’s best, actually.
Based on Neil Gaiman’s seminal graphic novel and starring Tom Sturridge as the King of Dreams, The Sandman tells the story of Morpheus—a recently freed man who travels across dimensions to restore his otherworldly powers. Sturridge is joined by a high-profile cast including Gwendoline Christie, Boyd Holbrook, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Charles Dance with voice performances from Patton Oswalt and Mark Hamill.
The penultimate chapter in Devi’s coming-of-age journey to find love and acceptance is upon us. When we last left our heroine, played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, she was torn between her two loyal suitors at the high school dance. Will Devi choose the dreamy, unreliable Paxton (Darren Barnet), or Ben (Jaren Lewison)—her academic nemesis-turned-unlikely crush? And what other issues will bubble to the surface as she makes up her mind?
Adapted from the Broadway show by Robert Horn, Jason Robert Brown, and Dan Elish, 13 tells the story of Evan Goldman (Eli Golden) who must navigate the tricky terrain of young adulthood as his Bar Mitzvah looms. His adolescent woes aren’t helped by the fact that his family has moved from New York City to small-town Indiana just before his big milestone. Tamra Davis directs the film with a cast that includes Debra Messing, Rhea Perlman, Peter Hermann, and Josh Peck.
