CLEVELAND, Ohio -- YouTube TV subscribers can relax, at least for now. You’ll be able to watch Tom Brady’s return to New England on “Sunday Night Football” on NBC and new episodes of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Potomac” and “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” this weekend. Probably.
Variety reports the streaming platform and NBCUniversal have agreed to a “short extension” of their current contract, which expired overnight. The decision allows NBC and more than a dozen channels, including Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, Telemundo, Syfy and USA Network, to remain on the platform while talks continue. It’s not known how long the extension will last.
The two companies have engaged in a public war of words for the better part of a week with each side blaming the other for the impasse. These types of disputes have become more common as television viewing habits have changed in recent years. The issue is usually over the fees content providers such has NBCUniversal charge distribution outlets like Google, which owns YouTube TV, to carry its programming.
There is another wrinkle, however, complicating negotiations between the two media giants. According to multiple reports, NBC wants YouTube TV to carry Peacock, its video streaming service. The request is somewhat unusual because consumers can already sign up for Peacock directly without a TV provider. YouTube TV has already said it would cut its monthly price by $10 from $64.99 to $54.99 if it’s not able to come to terms with NBCUniversal and those channels are removed.
