What to Know
After two games on the road, the BYU Cougars are heading back home. They will take on the Virginia Cavaliers at 10:15 p.m. ET on Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous games.
It was all tied up 7-7 at the half for BYU and the Washington State Cougars last week, but BYU stepped up in the second half for a 21-19 victory. It was another big night for BYU's RB Tyler Allgeier, who rushed for two TDs and 191 yards on 32 carries.
Meanwhile, Virginia netted a 48-40 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets last week. QB Brennan Armstrong went supernova for the Cavaliers as he passed for four TDs and 396 yards on 43 attempts in addition to rushing for two TDs and 99 yards. Armstrong's 77-yard touchdown toss to WR Dontayvion Wicks in the second quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the night.
This next contest is expected to be close, with BYU going off at just a 2.5-point favorite. But bettors beware: they are only 1-4 against the spread when favored.
The wins brought BYU up to 6-2 and Virginia to 6-2. A pair of defensive stats to keep an eye on: BYU is stumbling into the matchup with the 207th most rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 12 on the season. Virginia has experienced some struggles of their own as they are 197th worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 11 on the season. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
