‘Respect,’ more movies in theaters, on TV - The Oakland Press

The latest — and this time authorized — Aretha Franklin biopic, “Respect,” stars Jennifer Hudson, who was hand picked by Franklin before her death on Aug. 16, 2018. It also stars Forest Whitaker as her father, The Rev. C.L. Franklin, Marlon Wayans as her husband, Ted White, and Mary J. Blige. It’s in theaters Friday, Aug. 13.

Also new:

• “Beckett”: While vacationing in Greece with his girlfriend, an American tourist (John David Washington) becomes the target of a manhunt after a devastating accident. He is forced to run for his life to get across the country to the American embassy to clear his name. Available Aug. 13 on Netflix.

• “CODA”: A 17-year-old girl who is the child of deaf adults acts as interpreter for her parents and works in the family’s struggling fishing business. When she joins her high school’s choir club, she discovers a gift for singing. Starring Emilia Jones, Marlee Matlin and Eugenio Derbez, this PG-13-rated Sundance hit is in limited theater release and available on Apple TV+ on Aug. 13.

• “Free Guy”: A bank teller (Ryan Reynolds) discovers he is a minor player in an open-world video game and decides to become the hero of his own story. Also stars Jodie Comer and Joe Keery. In theaters Aug. 13, rated PG-13.

• “Don’t Breathe 2”: This R-rated thriller sequel is set in the years following the deadly home invasion, where Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) lives in quiet solace until his past sins catch up to him. Also stars Brendan Sexton III, Madelyn Grace and Stephanie Arcila. In theaters Aug. 13.

• “Homeroom”: A Sundance Official Selection, this documentary follows Oakland (Calif.) High School’s class of 2020 as they confront an unprecedented year. Anxiety over test scores and college applications gives way to uncertainty about a rapidly developing pandemic. Efforts to eliminate the school district’s police force unfold against the backdrop of growing nationwide demands for systemic change. Available on Hulu Aug. 12.

• “Nine Days”: Will (Winston Duke) spends nine days interviewing human souls for a chance to be born as people. Rated R, it also stars Zazie Beetz and Benedict Wong. In theaters.

• “Spin”: In this Disney Channel original movie, Rhea, a relatable Indian-American teen, discovers her passion for creating DJ mixes that blend the textures of her South Asian culture and the world around her. Her life involving an eclectic group of friends, after-school coding club, her family’s Indian restaurant and her tight-knit, multigenerational family changes when she falls for an aspiring DJ and her fervor for music is rekindled. Premieres at 8 p.m. Aug. 13 on the Disney Channel.

• “Shook”: When Mia, a social media star, becomes the target of an online terror campaign, she’s forced to solve a series of games to prevent people she cares about from being murdered. But is it real? This unrated horror film directed and written by Jennifer Harrington stars Daisye Tutor, Emily Goss, Nicola Posener, Mythica Series and Octavius J. Johnson. It’s available Aug. 17.

• “Stay Out of the Attic”: A diverse group of ex-cons-turned-professional-movers are convinced by their creepy client to pull an all-nighter for a generous pay bump. It turns out their client is a Nazi surgeon, and his living experiments are rotting in the attic of his Victorian mansion. Directed by Jerren Lauder, this unrated horror film stars Ryan Francis, Morgan Alexandria, Bryce Fernelius and Michael Flynn. It’s available Aug. 17.
