‘Blackbird’ and ‘Rialto’ top this week’s streaming movies at Cleveland Cinemas and Cinematheque - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Movie fans who don’t feel comfortable visiting a theater can still see new films from the comfort of their own home.

Both the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Cinematheque and Cleveland Cinemas (Cedar Lee, the Capitol and Chagrin Cinemas) offer a virtual option to view first-run films online. Half the proceeds from the virtual films go back to the local theater. Costs vary for each film, which are accessible for either 48 or 72 hours.

Beginning Sept. 18, Cleveland Cinemas is screening “Blackbird,” which is a remake of the 2014 Danish film “Silent Heart.” Starring Susan Sarandon and Kate Winslet, the film is about a terminally ill mother who brings her family together one last time before she dies.

Also, Cleveland Institute of Art’s Cinematheque is screening “Rialto,” which received a 100 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (“Avengers: Infinity War”) and Tom Glynn-Carney (“Dunkirk”), the sensitive drama involves the unraveling of a middle-aged Dublin dockworker’s life.

Here’s a look at new and current films streaming this weekend through Cinematheque and Cleveland Cinemas:

The Cleveland Institute of Art’s Cinematheque

“The Wall of Mexico” (opening Sept. 18)

The notion of the current wall debate gets turned on its head in new feature film “The Wall of Mexico,” which finds a wealthy Mexican-American family walling off its ranch in order to keep poor white people from entering.

“A Chef’s Voyage” (opening Sept. 18)

James Beard award-winning chef David Kinch, (“The Mind of a Chef”) highlights three legendary French chefs at their iconic restaurants in new documentary “A Chef’s Voyage.”

“Faust” (opening Sept. 18)

Featuring claymation, stop-motion animation, life-size puppets, live action and special effects, 1994 film “Faust” -- which is not appropriate for children -- is the work of great Czech animator and surrealist Jan Švankmajer.

“God of the Piano” (opening Sept. 18)

Gripping drama “God of the Piano” delves into parents living vicariously through their children. Having failed in her own career as a concert pianist, Anat makes sure her newborn son doesn’t make the same mistakes.

“Oliver Sacks: His Own Life” (opening Sept. 23)

Legendary neurologist and storyteller Oliver Sacks shares intimate details of his battles with drug addiction, homophobia and a medical establishment in new documentary “Oliver Sacks: His Own Life.”

“Sibyl” (now showing)

Not to be confused with the 1976 television mini-series of the same name, 2019 film “Sibyl” is a black comedy about a psychotherapist who leaves behind her profession to become a fiction writer using her former patients' stories -- and lurid details -- for source material.

“Meeting the Beatles In India” (now showing)

In 1968, Paul Saltzman -- who was studying transcendental meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi -- unexpectedly crossed paths with the Fab Four. Now the Emmy Award-winning Canadian filmmaker has turned this experience into new documentary “Meeting the Beatles In India,” which is narrated by Morgan Freeman and includes never-before-seen personal photos.

“Moroni For President” (now showing)

Documentary “Moroni For President” follows young, gay and Mormon academic Moroni Benally, who decides to run for the presidency of the Navajo Nation. The film, which is funny at times, is not only a compelling look at the LGBTQ community within the Navajo nation, but also suggests a similarity between the power structure of Native Americans and the U.S. government.

“African Violet” (now showing)

Boasting a 100 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, “African Violet” finds an Iranian ex-wife -- after learning her children put her former husband into a nursing home -- taking care of her former spouse.

“Buoyancy” (now showing)

Australia’s official entry for the 2020 Oscar for Best International Film, “Buoyancy” is a thriller about a Cambodian teen who sneaks away to Bangkok to make money working in a factory but ends up an abducted, abused slave on a Thai fishing trawler.

“#Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump” (now showing)

Dan Partland’s new documentary “#Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump” features mental health professionals analyzing the commander-in-chief’s behavior, psyche and stability in relation to whether he is fit to hold the office of President of the United States.

“From the Vine” (now showing)

Joe Pantoliano stars in new film “From the Vine,” which finds a tired CEO quitting the rat race and moving to his childhood hometown in Italy. The drama proves to be a celebration of heritage and happiness.

“Critical Thinking” (now showing)

John Leguizamo makes his theatrical directorial debut with “Critical Thinking.” Based on a true story, the inspiring comedy-drama is about a Cuban-American teacher in Miami who leads a group of underprivileged Black and Latinx high school students to the U.S. National Chess Championship.

“Made in Bangladesh” (now showing)

A modern era “Norma Rae,” “Made in Bangladesh” focuses on a textile worker who tries to organize a union at her ready-made garment factory. The film, which is a multiple award winner at numerous festivals, tackles workers' rights and feminist solidarity.

“Beau Travail” (now showing)

“Beau Travail”

Claire Denis' critically-acclaimed 1999 film “Beau Travail” has been restored. Set among French Foreign Legionnaires in Djibouti, East Africa, the movie -- which incorporates dance -- focuses on a drill sergeant obsessed with a sterling young recruit he’s trying to destroy.

“The Hole” (now showing)

Described as an apocalyptic masterpiece from the 1990s, “The Hole” is remarkably relevant today. After an epidemic clears out a city, a lonely young man living in a crumbling apartment building discovers a woman he can only see through a hole in the floor.

“House of Cardin” (now showing)

The new project from P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes (“Room 237” and “Mansfield 66/67”) finds the documentarians examining the life of iconic designer Pierre Cardin. Commenting on his impact on fashion and society are Naomi Campbell and Sharon Stone.

“Ghost Tropic” (now showing)

As one of the best movies streamed in this year’s Cleveland International Film Festival, Bas Devos' new dreamy film “Ghost Tropic” follows a Brussels cleaning woman’s unexpected discovery of nocturnal humanity.

“Vinyl Nation” (now showing)

After near extinction more than a decade ago, vinyl has made a comeback in a big way. Perfect for fans of Record Store Day, the new documentary “Vinyl Nation” explores its rebirth through interviews with vinyl-philes.

“Mr. Soul!” (now showing)

From 1968 to 1973, the hip, smart, political and gay Ellis Haizlip hosted the groundbreaking WNET/PBS program “Soul!,” which was created as a Black “Tonight Show.” The Emmy Award-winning show, which included high-profile guests such as Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Jesse Jackson, Toni Morrison, Sidney Poitier and Stevie Wonder, is examined in detail in new documentary “Mr. Soul!”

“Driven to Abstraction” (now showing)

Documentarian Daria Price’s latest work “Driven to Abstraction” tells the story about one of the greatest art hoaxes of modern times. During a 15-year period, a respected New York City art gallery sold a series of fake Knoedler abstract expressionist paintings for $80 million.

“Coup 53” (now showing)

Co-written and edited by Academy Award-winner Walter Murch, “Coup 53” digs deep into America’s role in the 1953 overthrow of Iran’s democratically-elected Prime Minister Mossadegh in favor of the Shah. The documentary features never-before-seen 16mm footage and archival documents.

There’s nothing coincidental about the timing of the release of brand-new film “The Fight.” The documentary follows ACLU lawyers battling the Trump administration over voting rights, abortion, parent-child separation and the loss of a soldier’s military career.

“Chuck Berry” (opening Sept. 18)

Inaugural Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Chuck Berry is the subject of a new documentary from award-winning filmmaker Jon Brewer (“B.B. King: Life of Riley”). The film includes the first-ever interview with Berry’s widow, Thelmetta, as well as Gene Simmons, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, Steven Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, George Thorogood, Joe Bonamassa and Nile Rodgers. “Saul & Ruby’s Holocaust Survivors Band” (opening Sept. 18)

Tod Lending’s new drama “Saul & Ruby’s Holocaust Survivors Band” follows two Holocaust survivors in South Florida. The duo forms a klezmer band that not only celebrates life but also learns about the healing power of music.
