CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If you were hoping to see “Black Widow” in theaters or on Disney+ by the end of the year, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer. The Scarlett Johansson superhero movie is now scheduled to hit the big screen on May 7, 2021.

Marvel’s 24th film, set before the events of “Avengers: Endgame," was originally set to premiere back on May 1, but was then postponed until Nov. 6 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The release was delayed again Wednesday as studios have become warier of releasing their tentpole movies following the tepid responses to recent theatrical releases such as “Tenet” and Disney’s own “The New Mutants.”

“Black Widow”'s move set off a chain reaction affecting two other Marvel movies in the pipeline: “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is being delayed two months to July 9, 2021, while “The Eternals," originally set for Feb. 12, 2021, has been pushed back all the way to Nov. 5, 2021.

“Marvel made the right & responsible decision,” tweeted “Eternals” star Kumail Nanjiani. “There’s a pandemic. Nothing is more important than health & lives. I can’t tell ppl to go to a movie theater until I feel safe going to one. Take care of yourselves. I promise it’ll be worth the wait!”

This marks the first year without a new Marvel movie since 2009.

Meanwhile, Disney also announced Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” is being delayed nearly a year to Dec. 10, 2021. The studio, however, hasn’t yet given up on bringing new movies to theaters this year. Pixar’s “Soul” and “Free Guy," a sci-fi action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, remain on the calendar, at least for now, for release on Nov. 20 and Dec. 11, respectively, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Barring any further changes, Disney will face competition from the latest James Bond movie “No Time To Die," also scheduled for release on Nov. 20, and “Wonder Woman 1984," arriving in theaters Dec. 25.
