EXPECTING AMY Stream on HBO Max. In March of last year, the comedian Amy Schumer released a stand-up special, “Growing,” that was filmed while Schumer was pregnant. Making it, Schumer said, was the most difficult challenge of her career. “I’m ecstatic and furious,” she told The New York Times shortly before the special’s release. “And pleased and peaceful and manic and hopeless and so hopeful it’s crazy.” So viewers can expect both highs and lows in this new, three-part documentary, which follows Schumer during her pregnancy. “Expecting Amy” is woven together primarily from cellphone video footage (Alexander Hammer, who worked on Beyoncé’s “Homecoming,” is the director and editor), which adds to the intimacy.
BLINDSPOTTING (2018) Stream on HBO platforms; rent on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu and YouTube. After bopping around 18th-century New York as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in “Hamilton,” Daveed Diggs crossed coasts to play a man avoiding trouble in “Blindspotting,” a dramedy set in present-day Oakland, Calif. The plot covers several days in the life of Diggs’s character, Collin, who’s nearing the end of his probation for a felony. His effort to avoid being sent back to prison is complicated by his relationship with a close friend, Miles (Rafael Casal), whose sensitivity to Collin’s need to stay on the right side of the law is cavalier at best. Miles is white. Collin is Black. The days that the movie spends with them touch on issues of race, class and gentrification, and build to a wrenching climax. The film “has an energetic-to-the-point-of-boisterous style,” Glenn Kenny wrote in his review for The Times. “Its lively frequency,” he added, “is embedded in the writing, bolstered by Carlos López Estrada’s direction, and kept buoyant by the performers.”
PALM SPRINGS (2020) Stream on Hulu. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti star in this romantic comedy, which was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The feature directorial debut of Max Barbakow, “Palm Springs” centers on two guests at a Southern California wedding: Nyles (Samberg), who is a charmer in a Hawaiian shirt, and Sarah (Milioti), the sister of the bride. Their story gets weird fast, mixing in several shots of sci-fi as it plays with romantic comedy conventions. “You don’t have to be a genre scientist to know where this will end up,” A.O. Scott wrote in his review for The Times. “But the long, crazy middle of this wildly funny, admirably inventive movie is where the surprises are lurking.”
