At long-last, “Love, Simon” is becoming a television series. And while it’s set at the same high school in the same city, there’s a new kid in school.
The series is titled "Love, Victor," and it’s airing on Hulu, instead of Disney+. The adaptation of the 2018 romantic comedy “Love, Simon,” still explores the same themes, following Victor as he explores a new city, his sexuality and his identity — with some help from Simon. But Variety reports Disney felt the content wasn’t appropriate for its newest streaming platform.
"Disney felt many issues explored on the show, including alcohol use and sexual exploration, would not fit in with the family-friendly content on Disney Plus," unnamed sources told Variety.
Hulu, however, hosts a cadre of young adult shows presenting similar content.
Craig Erwich, senior vice president of the platform's original content, said in a statement, “The show’s contemporary lens and honest storytelling make it a perfect fit for the millions of fans on Hulu who already watch and see themselves in series like ‘Looking For Alaska,’ ‘Pen15’ and ‘Grown-ish.’”
It’s the second show the Walt Disney Company has moved to Hulu from Disney Plus, following “High Fidelity,” another series based on a movie that premiered earlier this year.
Disney+ does have some LGBTQ+ representation, including characters in its original series "Andi Mack," "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" and "Diary of a Future Female President." But the platform that hosts the "Star Wars" and "Avengers" movies as well as shows like the "Simpsons," has shied away from some mature content.
The 10-episode first season is scheduled to debut in time for Pride month this June. Actor Michael Cimino, who plays Victor, is joined by James Martinez, Ana Ortiz, Isabella Ferreira and Mateo Fernandez as the cast of the show.
“We are beyond excited that ‘Love, Victor’ will be joining Hulu’s fresh and authentic lineup of high school series and that we’ll be able to continue telling honest, important coming of age stories with our terrific group of writers and our tremendous ensemble," said showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who wrote "Love, Simon" and produced the NBC series “This is Us.”
The series just wrapped up production on its first season, and Hulu says they've opened a writers' room to explore storylines for a potential second season.
