Pete Buttigieg is going up with a TV and digital ad buy in a dozen Super Tuesday states — one of the last 2020 presidential candidate to do so ahead of next week's mega-primary day.
Buttigieg's campaign will start airing TV spots on Tuesday and Wednesday in 12 of the 14 March 3 primary states, part of a seven-figure ad buy on cable and broadcast stations, shared first with POLITICO. The campaign will also go up with a second, seven-figure digital ad program in those states.
Buttigieg's late start in TV advertising is another sign that he's feeling the financial pressure of his better-funded presidential rivals. Bernie Sanders, who raised $25 million in January, and Mike Bloomberg, who is self-funding his bid, have already poured millions into spending on TV ads in these states. Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren also started airing TV ads earlier this week.
Joe Biden, notably, also hasn't started airing TV ads in Super Tuesday states.
Last week, Buttigieg issued a fundraising plea to his supporters, setting a $13 million goal to raise between then and March 3, an aggressive fundraising pace that would requiring collecting at least $1 million every day to keep up. Buttigieg raised just over $6 million in January in the run-up to Iowa and New Hampshire, but he spent more than $14 million during that same period.
He has sprinted through high-dollar fundraisers in recent days, scheduling 10 of them during the two weeks between the Nevada caucuses and March 3.
Buttigieg, who holds a slim delegate lead over Sanders in Iowa, is heading into a challenging stretch: an election calendar that boasts a more diverse voting population, where he's struggled to make inroads. He came in third place in the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, and he's polling in fourth place — behind Biden, Sanders and billionaire Tom Steyer — in South Carolina, according to recent polling.
But Buttigieg did get some air-cover from a super PAC supporting him. VoteVets, a Buttigieg-backing progressive veterans group, confirmed on Saturday that they have planned their own seven-figure TV ad buy to boost the former South Bend, Ind., mayor.
For the new TV ads, the targeted states include: Alabama, Arkansans, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Vermont and Virginia. The campaign declined to share more details on how the spending would be allocated among those states, nor did it share the content of the advertising. Within the past few days, Buttigieg has started airing ads in South Carolina that criticize Sanders directly for the Vermont senator's single-payer health care plan.
Buttigieg's campaign already kicked off some digital ad spending in seven of these states, targeting counties that flipped from Barack Obama to Donald Trump in 2016.
In a statement shared with POLITICO, Buttigieg's campaign also touted its grassroots organization in Super Tuesday states, a network of 25,000 volunteers who have hosted more than 3,000 events for Buttigieg over the last year.
Buttigieg himself dipped into those states during the run-up to Nevada and South Carolina. In recent days, he drew thousand-person crowds in Aurora, Colo.; Arlington, Va.; and Salt Lake City. He's scheduled to appear in Raleigh, N.C., and Oklahoma City in the coming days.
